Barnsley host Stoke at the Oakwell Stadium (Barnsley) in the 32nd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7 pm (UK) on Wednesday, February 24. Read our reasons for Barnsley vs Stoke prediction and betting tips.
Both sides come into this match locked on 45 points each and a win for either team will see them leapfrog the other to seventh place in the standings. Barnsley are in a rich vein of form, having won their last three games, with their most recent victory on the road against Bristol (1-0). On the other hand, Stoke are ninth on the Championship table, with Barnsley right behind them. The Potters are ahead of the Colliers on goal difference, although the hosts have a game in hand. Stoke enjoyed a routine afternoon on Saturday as they cruised to a 3-0 home win against a Luton, meaning Michael O'Neill's side have won back-to-back league games and are now back in the playoff race.
Barnsley have been in fine form this season under Valerien Ismael and are coming into this match on the back of a huge 1-0 win against the free-falling Bristol. The Tykes have indeed improved vastly under the Frenchman, putting some distance between themselves and the relegation zone. The Tykes have left behind their little purple patch in the Championship – in the weeks after the turn of the year, Barnsley's promising form under Valerien Ismael started to unravel, creating the prospect of the remainder of the campaign being spent in mid-table.
Three successive victories for the loss of just one goal have changed the club's trajectory, however, and they will now feel that they can challenge for the play-offs. Sitting just six points adrift of fifth-placed Reading with a game in hand, Ismael knows that the Tykes are within touching distance of becoming a major player in the promotion race, a remarkable change in fortunes after narrowly avoiding relegation in July.
On the other hand, Stoke were winless in 14 of their last 17 overall games, and are on a seven-game winless run on the road (D6, L1). In fact, their latest victory away from home was way back in December, 1-0 against the dead-last placed Wycombe. However, Michael O'Neill will be relieved that his side have rallied to claim successive wins against Sheffield Wed and Luton.
Stoke, who said farewell to club stalwart Ryan Shawcross - who is joining David Beckham-owned Major League Soccer side Inter Miami - comfortably kept a 15th league clean sheet of the season against Luton (3-0) on Saturday. The Potters now trail Bournemouth at 6th by just four points with 15 matches remaining and after winning back-to-back games at the bet365 Stadium, they go to Yorkshire hoping they can end a near three-month wait for an away victory.

Barnsley meet Stoke having not won in five league games against Stoke (D3, L2) since a 1-0 win back in February 2007. Most recently the two sides shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at Stoke in October. Barnsley have won seven home league matches this season, as many as they managed last season, while Stoke are looking to win consecutive away league games against Barnsley for the first time in more than a century.
While both Barnsley and Stoke will be eyeing maximum points in Yorkshire, they will also look to avoid giving their rivals an edge in the race for the top-six. With that in mind, we expect a low-scoring contest at the Oakwell, so the BettingKick’s Barnsley vs Stoke prediction is: Under 2.5 goals.
