Barnsley host Swansea at the Oakwell (Barnsley) in the 24th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Saturday, January 16.
BARNSLEY VS SWANSEA MATCH ANALYSIS
The hosts head into this weekend after a 1-0 defeat against leaders Norwich at the Carrow Road in the league and a 2-0 FA Cup Round 3 win against League Two side Tranmere. They are in 9th place and maximum points against second-placed visitors will boost their play-off ambitions. As for the visitors, Swansea come into this match also on the back of two wins – against Watford at home (2-1) in the Championship and a League Two side Stevenage in the R3 of the FA Cup (0-2). They are in 2nd and with a win here they could close the gap at the top.
Barnsley have started this new campaign in the same vein after miraculously escaping the relegation on the final day of the last season. They had been sitting near the relegation zone early in the campaign but have dramatically improved their form since then. The Tykes were without a win in their first seven matches, but their turnaround has been remarkable. In their next 16 matches, they have won 10 and lost 6 and got really close to play-off berths.
Against Norwich, Barnsley came into the match as the Championship's form horses with five wins from six games, but were without skipper Alex Mowatt (Covid-19), along with a back-up keeper Brad Collins. While Valerien Ismael's side started the better, the Canaries gradually turned up the heat and deserved the win. However, the Tykes didn’t let that defeat affect them in their next game, where Michel Helik's header and a stoppage-time penalty from Cauley Woodrow sent Barnsley through to the fourth round of the FA Cup against Tranmere.
Swansea, on the other hand, have done brilliantly under Steve Cooper in his first managerial job despite limited resources and a small squad. They are where they want to be – in the play-offs contention. The Welsh team have lost four matches since a defeat in the last season's play-offs, which is impressive in its own right. After their 0-0 blip against another play-off hopefuls Reading on December 30, they continue to look like a team capable of mounting another promotion push.
Against Watford, the Swans rose to second place in the Championship as Jamal Lowe scored twice to help them overcome rival promotion contenders. Wednesday's goalless draw at home to Reading had seen the Swans miss an opportunity to close the gap on the Canaries, who had lost to Watford but on this occasion, even after falling behind, Swansea seized their chance to move up into the automatic promotion places.

Barnsley are winless in their last 15 matches against Swansea City in all competitions (D7 L8) since 1983, while Swansea have drawn four of their last five away league matches at Barnsley (W1).
The host have boosted their squad with two new signings - Norwich City striker Carlton Morris and a 21-year-old Forest Green defender Liam Kitching. The tykes need to show a little bit more belief to win a top game than they did at Norwich and the next game against Swansea is exactly that kind of game to prove a point.
On the other hand, Swansea’s win against Watford was a stern examination of their promotion credentials and, while there is a long way to go in this congested battle to return to the Premier League, head coach Steve Cooper will be encouraged by his team's response. Even more so, after they progressed to the fourth round in the FA Cup.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
