Barnsley host Swansea at the Oakwell (Barnsley) in the first leg of the Championship Play-Off Semi-finals and the match kicks off at 8.15 pm (UK) on Monday, May 17. Read our reasons for Barnsley vs Swansea prediction and betting tips
Beaten twice in this particular fixture across the regular season, Barnsley are about to square off with Swansea, who are making their second successive appearance in the play-off. Barnsley, meanwhile, are the team that are the outsiders for the play-offs, but they have proven the doubters wrong all the way through the campaign. The Swans managed to secure a fourth-place finish and ended the regular campaign two points clear of Barnsley in fifth. That means that Cooper’s side have the potential advantage of playing the deciding leg of the tie at the Liberty Stadium, something they will be hoping that works out and gives them a slight edge.
The Reds have had only three play-off campaigns. As well as the glory of 2006 against the Swans, Barnsley also came up from the third tier in 2016 when defeating Millwall 3-1 at Wembley. But their only previous play-off experience at this level ended in defeat way back in the 1999/00 season. But if they are looking for any kind of lucky omen, the Reds have won the two play-off campaigns in which they played their semi-final first leg at Oakwell.
Regardless of the outcome, this has been a hugely successful season for Barnsley and gives them something to build upon in the years ahead. After barely surviving relegation at the end of the 2019/20 season, Barnsley have been flying high for much of this campaign. Barnsley came on strong after Christmas and disrupted the play-off scene, losing just three times since January 19. With supporters back in the stadium on Monday, taking a first-leg lead looks plausible.
As for Swansea, after a late surge pushed them into the play-off places, they were beaten in the Semi-Final by Brentford last season and the feeling was Steve Cooper had them overachieving. The manager himself was not concerned by what people had to say and for a long time, it looked like Swansea could have challenged for automatic promotion to the Premier League before having to settle for another bid at the play-off. They were not at their best over the last couple of months and had to settle for a 4th place finish.
On the other hand, Swansea were the most solid team in the Championship this season keeping the most amount of clean sheets. While they also got the better of Barnsley twice this campaign in the regular season winning both games 2-0. That does suggest that Swansea could be in the driving seat for the play-off semis and they also have that added experience of their tie with Brentford last term. However, having said that, Barnsley are a side that have been defying the odds all season long and they could well be set to do so yet again here.

Barnsley meet Swansea who were the only side to complete a league double over Barnsley, winning 2-0 both home and away against the Tykes. Moreover, Swansea are unbeaten in their last 16 matches against Barnsley in all competitions (W9, D7).
However, the form guide will certainly have a few backing Barnsley to get past Swansea and it might not be a massive surprise if they can continue to defy the expectations. Going into the play-off means there is every chance the Tykes can earn their place in the top flight for only the second time, but they have to be considered the outsiders of the four teams involved.
