Bayern Munich will host Atletico Madrid on Wednesday as they start the defense of their UEFA Champions League title won in Lisabon.
Bayern, who won the treble in 2019-20, started the new season with an 8-0 demolition of Schalke. They then beat Sevilla 2-1 after extra time in the UEFA Super Cup before a surprise 4-1 league loss away to Hoffenheim. Hansi Flick's side then defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the DFL-Supercup and won 4-3 against Hertha Berlin before the international break. Bayern showed class once again on Saturday as they ease to a 4-1 victory against Bielefeld with Muller and Lewandowski as key players for the best team in the world in 2020. The Polish striker has been in phenomenal form, already contributing seven goals and three assists from just 299 minutes of football. Bayern became the first team in the European Cup / Champions League history to win every match before winning the tournament last year. The 11-match winning run that Bayern is on currently is the longest for a side in the history of the tournament.
Flick is unlikely to rotate his current Bayern XI, meaning that Alphonso Davies could be named on the substitutes' bench. Kingsley Coman will start on the left side of the attack but Douglas Costa will get some minutes after making an impact from the bench last time. Tolisso showed great signs of improvement and looks like ready to fill Thiago's spot and Lucas Hernandez is helping as left-back until Davies put aside fatigue issues from the end of the last season.
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Pavard, Sule, Alaba, Hernandez; Tolisso, Goretzka; Gnabry, Muller, Coman; Lewandowski
Diego Simeone has been dealt a blow after a profitable weekend in which Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, their main challengers for the Liga title this season, all dropped three points on Saturday. Atlético ran out 2-0 winners away at Celta with goals from Luis Suárez and Yannick Carrasco in a game that saw Simeone start the former Barcelona forward with Diego Costa for the first time. After the 90 minutes in Vigo, it will be a while before Atlético can field the two strikers together again with Costa ruled out for at least three weeks with a muscle strain. Luis Suarez got the ball rolling for the visitors after just four minutes as he swept home Angel Correa’s cut back from close range. Celta responded following that early setback with Sergio Carreira clipping a post and Jan Oblak denying Santi Mina. Atletico looked to re-establish themselves after the break as Ivan Villar denied Suarez just after the restart. Despite being the better side in the closing stages, Simeone had to wait until added time to wrap up the points as Yannick Carrasco nodded home after Joao Felix’s strike came back off the bar.
Costa and Suárez have mostly been rotating in the number nine position and Simeone has been easing the Uruguayan in after his summer move by substituting him regularly. Now, with Suárez not likely to be risked for the full 90 minutes in six consecutive games, Simeone will have to improvise. Marcos Llorente, João Félix, and Ángel Correa can all push up as a secondary striker, with the former two ending the game in Vigo as the front pair after Suárez and Costa had gone off. Atletico manager Diego Simeone is also likely to be without midfielder Saul Niguez and defender Jose Maria Gimenez on Wednesday. Both players missed Saturday's 2-0 victory at Celta Vigo.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Trippier, Savic, Felipe, Lodi; Llorente, Torreira, Koke, Niguez; Suarez, Felix

Everybody will be curious to see if this Atletico side can be so good defensively to stop the current champions. Bayern looks like a well-oiled machine and despite the quality that the team from Madrid has, a home win should be the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
