Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich will face a tough test when they welcome in-form Freiburg to the Allianz Arena on Sunday.
It has been a testing week to start 2021 for defending treble winners Bayern. A 3-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Mönchengladbach last Friday was followed up on Wednesday evening by a shock exit in the DFB Cup second round at the hands of Bundesliga 2 promotion chasers Holstein Kiel, via a penalty shoot-out. The defeat at Borussia-Park brought an end to an 11-match unbeaten run in the German top flight and Bayern will be looking to bounce back quickly when they host Freiburg, a team to whom the Bavarians have never lost at home.
Leroy Sane earned some confidence in midweek despite the result with a sensational direct free-kick, and that morale-boost will be needed with Kingsley Coman not likely to be available. Leon Goretzka missed out in Kiel with a knock which should not rule him out of Sunday's game, though Corentin Tolisso and Jamal Musiala are on standby for his central midfield spot. Benjamin Pavard could keep his place on the right side of the defense. If not, expect Niklas Süle to shift across allowing Jerome Boateng to partner David Alaba at center-back instead.

Freiburg has had no such trouble transitioning their form into the new year. Freiburg travel to Munich in the middle of a club-record winning run of five matches. They have also scored 28 goals after 15 games of a season for just the second time in their Bundesliga history, the first since hitting 30 in 1994/95. They come to the Allianz Arena on the back of one of their biggest-ever Bundesliga wins having put five past Koln without reply last time out. Despite contributing to seven goals in his last seven league games, Grifo was not involved in any of the five scored against the visitors, but his playmaking talents will be at the heart of Streich's plans in Munich.
The star of that last victory was Ermedin Demirovic, with a goal and two assists which should see him continue ahead of former Bayern forward Nils Petersen. Kwon Chang-hoon has been ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury while goalkeeper Mark Flekken is continuing his recovery from a broken elbow, so Streich looks likely to stick with his winning formula.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious.
