Even without the injured Robert Lewandowski, holders Bayern Munich are targeting a repeat of last season’s UEFA Champions League final success when they host Paris Saint-Germain and Neymar in the 2020/21 quarter-final the first leg on Wednesday. Read our reasons for Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint-Germain prediction and betting tips.
The loss of Lewandowski is huge for any side. The 2020 FIFA Best Men’s Player was instrumental in Bayern’s clean sweep of six trophies in the last year and has been in the imperious form again this campaign with a personal best haul of 35 goals in the Bundesliga. A knee injury on international duty with Poland has him sidelined for a few weeks, potentially including the second leg, but the European champions have the means to cope. Whether it’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, or Thomas Müller who ultimately leads the line, Bayern’s record in 10 games under Hansi Flick without Lewandowski is a strong nine wins and one draw, scoring 23 and conceding only four.
It was the first of the aforementioned, one of three former PSG players in the Munich ranks, who got the nod on Saturday away at Leipzig, but Leon Goretzka – or SCOREtzka as he’s now known – was the match-winner to send the champions seven points clear in the league. Further back, Alphonso Davies and Jerome Boateng sat out that game through suspension but are set to be reinstated to the back four in front of captain Manuel Neuer, who has produced countless game-defining saves in the last year. Bayern’s record in the competition since Flick took charge reads 54 goals scored and only 11 conceded across 15 wins and one draw. Coman has had a direct hand in a team-leading six Champions League goals for Bayern this season (three goals, three assists).
Bayern: Neuer (c) - Pavard, Boateng, Alaba, Davies - Kimmich, Goretzka - Gnabry, Müller, Coman - Choupo-Moting
Out: Costa (metatarsal), Lewandowski (knee), Tolisso (thigh)
Doubtful: Hoffmann (knee), Nianzou (thigh)
Coach: Hansi Flick
PSG had their top-of-the-table clash on Saturday but first fared less well against second in France as the Parisians went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Lille, who leapfrogged the champions to the Ligue 1 summit. Davies’ fellow Canada international Jonathan David got the goal in the first half to leave Mauricio Pochettino’s side three points adrift at the top and only one ahead of former Bayern boss Niko Kovac’s Monaco.
Last season’s beaten Champions League finalists also lost Neymar to a late red card – the third in his last 14 league outings – but the Brazilian will be available for the trip to the Allianz Arena alongside Kylian Mbappe and Angel di Maria – the trio who started and failed to get past Neuer in last summer’s final in Lisbon. Former Bayern left-back Juan Bernat remains out with a knee injury, so ex-Borussia Dortmund defender Abdou Diallo is set to start. Former Schalke starlets Julian Draxler and Thilo Kehrer are also options.
PSG: Navas - Florenzi, Marquinhos (c), Kimpembe, Diallo - Herrera, Gueye - Di Maria, Rafinha, Neymar - Mbappe
Out: Bernat (knee), Paredes (suspended), Verratti (not included)
Doubtful: Danilo (calf), Icardi (thigh), Kurzawa (calf), Sarabia (thigh)
Coach: Mauricio Pochettino

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
