Belgium meet Russia at the Gazprom Arena (Saint Petersburg) in the EURO 2020 Group B Round 1 match and the game kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Saturday, June 12. Read our reason for Belgium vs Russia prediction and betting tips.
RUSSIA UNLIKELY TO PUT SPOKE IN BELGIUM’S WHEELS
The Belgians are ranked No 1 in the world in Fifa’s rankings and are among the favourites to win the tournament, while Russia may struggle to get out of a group also containing dark horses Denmark and debutants Finland. However, age is starting to creep up on Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ and this will be their last realistic chance of winning a major international tournament. On the other hand, Russia will hope to replicate their 2018 World Cup exploits and make it to the Quarterfinals again. They have a home advantage in their opening two games which can play into their hands.
BELGIUM TO TOP GROUP B COMFORTABLY?
Belgium have an array of players that is the envy of much of Europe, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, midfielders Kevin de Bruyne and Yannick Carrasco, and forwards Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku among their stars. However, with plenty of big names approaching the autumn of their careers, this seems like crunch time for Roberto Martinez’s side.
Vincent Kompany is gone and Thomas Vermaelen, Toby Alderweireld, and Jan Vertonghen will be following him soon. Eden Hazard has dropped off the radar and few superstars appear to be stepping up just yet. In Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, they boast two of the finest players at the tournament, but they will run into plenty of traffic in the knockout stages. Belgium could be in for a relatively unpleasant surprise.
A look at Belgium’s betting odds: Belgium have been in front at the break in five of their last seven games and that is a pattern that can continue on Saturday. Our first pick of the day is Belgium HT/FT win.
RUSSIA LACKING TOP QUALITY
Following the promise that was shown during the FIFA World Cup 2018 in which they made it all the way to the quarter-finals, things have somewhat hit a standstill for Russia. They achieved qualification to the Euros without much stress, finishing second in their group, losing just two of the ten games – both against the group winners Belgium, winning the remaining eight fixtures.
However, not much progress has been made as Stanislav Cherchesov failed to lead them to promotion in the UEFA Nations League on two occasions already while things appear tricky with regard to their World Cup qualifying hopes as well following the defeat to Slovakia in March. Just two wins in ten games leading up to a major tournament does not make for good reading for Russia.
A look at Russian betting odds: Russia squad features just a few star names, and look workmanlike at best. Belgium’s players though are mostly based in Europe’s elite leagues and they should have enough class to win by a comfortable margin. Our second pick of the day is the winning margin – Belgium by 2.

These two teams were in the same qualifying group for the tournament and Belgium demonstrated in their Group I meetings that they are superior, winning 3-1 at home and 4-1 away. Even though this opener is in St Petersburg, it should hold few fears for the Belgians and they can lay down an early marker to the rest of the contenders.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
