It could be early in the season, but both Benevento and Spezia have in mind that points in their battles can be crucial at the end of the season to avoid relegation.
If they want to stay in the Seria A Benevento must learn how to defend, which is a popular opinion among their fans after the start of the season. After six matches Benevento conceded 17 goals, as much as last-placed Crotone, and kept a clean sheet one time, in a 1-0 win against Bologna. Their second win of the season was vs Sampdoria in their first match of the new campaign when they brilliantly overturned the hosts' two-goal advantage. With six points after six matches they are on a pace to be close to avoid relegation but with four losses in a row, their coach Filipo Inzaghi must be nervous and concern before the match against Spezia.
Hellas Verona midfielder Antonin Barak punished them with a brace in a 3-1 loss on Monday. Benevento played bravely in the first half and scored the equalizer with Gianluca Lapadula but they had Gianluca Caprari sent off for verbally abusing the referee after a penalty kick not awarded to the visitors. The home side bounced back to secure a comfortable win against a team that played with a man less after the former Sampdoria striker verbally abused one of the referee’s assistants after Benevento had not been awarded a penalty kick in the second half.
He got a two-match ban and he will be missed as a central part of the Benevento attack that showed potential with 10 goals from the start of the season. They faced a strong Verona team but also failed many goal chances. On the other end, there is a feeling that they concede every time they receive a shot and there is room for a big improvement. They will also miss central defender Alessandro Tuia who is out of action for at least a month after undergoing surgery on facial fractures after receiving a punch at the dying moments of the previous game.
The last time when Spezia was on a pitch, they felt comfortable against Juventus before Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference off the bench, scoring two goals to give Juventus a 4-1 victory away to a Spezia side that had been troubling them. The Bianconeri again looked fairly toothless in the first half, mostly because Spezia played great football. Alvaro Morata managed to beat the offside trap to open the scoring, but they found an equalizer when Tommaso Pobega’s strike was deflected in to equalize before the break. Ronaldo made his comeback after COVID-19 and took all of three minutes to find the net, waltzing around the goalkeeper. After Gigi Buffon’s impressive save that could level the game, Adrien Rabiot scored with his weaker right foot, then Federico Chiesa won a penalty converted by Ronaldo with a Panenka chip.
Spezia has picked up five points from six games and sit 17th in Serie A, but their coach Vincenzo Italiano believes he made the biggest mistake as he thought his side could win against Juventus: “When I saw the lads playing inside Juventus’ half I thought we could have obtained more. Until they scored the 2-1 with Ronaldo the game was leveled. Even after they took the lead Gigi Buffon made an extraordinary save to deny Julian Chabot. We need to go ahead and believe in what we do. We can’t lose enthusiasm and go ahead.”
With their best scorer Galabinov out and a very leaky defense that conceded 15 goals, they must found a new target man that could give them more options in the attack. Spezia has reportedly targeted a move for Udinese forward Ilija Nestorovski, who seems set to leave the Dacia Arena in January. The North Macedonia international has only started once this season - against Vicenza in the Coppa Italia - and has appeared three times off the bench in Serie A 2020-21. A lot of work must be done to achieve their aim, continuity of playing in the Seria A.

It could be a relegation battle thriller with newly promoted teams that want confidence and performance lift before the international break. Both teams to score is a most reasonable bet

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
