Benfica and PSV beat Spartak Moscow and Middtjyland in both matches in the last round of qualifiers for the Champions League. Now, it's playoffs round time and the winner from this matchup will play in the group round with the elite European teams. Read our Benfica vs PSV prediction and betting tips.
Benfica started the season with four wins. In addition to beating Spartak twice, easily, dominantly, 2-0 at home and away, they also won matches in the domestic championship. Two games, two victories with guys who are not in the foreground with Jorge Jesus, so they are rested and full of confidence before this duel. Primeira is a league in which there are no easy opponents, but the class that Benfica has on and off the bench that guarantees they will be at the top this season as well, maybe even in the place for the champions.
However, it is too early for the story about the title in Portugal, because the main goal of Benfica is the place in the group stage of the Champions League, to show their best players in the elite and after that to do well in the transfer market. They have great individual quality, a great midfield, and very fast players on the wings. With the arrival of Yaremchuk in the striker role, they are even stronger than last season, because they kept all the important players in the team. Centre-back Jan Vertonghen and forwards Darwin Nunez and Haris Seferovic are unavailable due to injury.
Benfica: Vlachodimos; Gilberto, Otamendi, Verissimo, Grimaldo; Pizzi, Weigl, Mario, Everton; Waldschmidt, Yaremchuk
PSV eased past Middtjyland with wins in two matches, they won against Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup in impressive fashion, and they built their confidence levels perfectly for one of their matches of the season. PSV has some very interesting players that could develop their skills in the future to be a part of the elite European clubs. Malen went to Dortmund, Dumfries to Inter, but PSV showed they have players to replace them. Coach Schmidt has leaders on and off the pitch in the likes of Van Ginkel, Gotze, and Zahavi, so Gakpo and Maudeke should only get better in a short time.
PSV made some adjustments because they lost some speed regarding last season, but they are still very dangerous. Zahavi is a key player in the attack. Israeli striker is capable of scoring in every way but also a very unselfish player that opens space for others. They are playing more directly than the last term, and counterattacks are their most lethal weapon. They should have some problems in the defense because of lack of speed but newcomer Ramalho has many minutes in the Champions League with his ex-club Salzburg, so lack of experience is not such a big problem. They have three players unavailable due to injury, Maximiliano Romero, Maxime Delaghe, and Richard Ledezma.
PSV Eindhoven: Drommel; Mwene, Ramalho, Boscagli, Max; Sangare, Van Ginkel; Madueke, Gotze, Gakpo; Zahavi

Estadio da Luz is Benfica’s fortress and they will try to reach the maximum from the playing at home. PSV is a good team but at the moment probably not on the same level as the hosts. BettingKick’s Benfica vs PSV prediction is: Home team win.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
