VfB Stuttgart head to fellow promoted side Arminia Bielefeld as the 2020/21 season reaches halfway point on Wednesday.
Last season’s Bundesliga 2 champions Bielefeld come into this clash on the back of an upturn in form that has seen them win two of their last four outings and move two points clear of the relegation play-off spot. Captain Fabian Klos got the only goal as they beat Schalke in the final game of 2020 before Reinhold Yabo got them going in 2021 with another 1-0 victory at home to Hertha Berlin.
A goalless draw away at Hoffenheim at the weekend will have equally impressed coach Uwe Neuhaus, who looks set to continue with the same team for the third straight game. Ritsu Doan and Klos are Bielefeld’s joint-top scorers. While they may only have two goals each, their strikes have accounted for six of the club’s 14 points this season.
Bielefeld: Ortega - Brunner, Pieper, Nilsson, Laursen - Kunze - Doan, Hartel, Yabo - Klos (c), Cordova
Out: Voglsammer (calf)
Doubtful: Prietl (muscular)
Coach: Uwe Neuhaus
While Stuttgart may have finished second to Bielefeld in Bundesliga 2 last term, they are well ahead of their opponents in the top flight now. Arminia were Bundesliga 2 champions last season, finishing 10 points clear of Stuttgart but failing to beat the runners-up in their two encounters. All five of their victories this campaign have come on their travels, but they did fight back to earn a late, late draw at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach at the weekend. Silas Wamangituka’s 96th-minute penalty going with Gonzalez’s earlier equalizer, meaning the pair have both scored in the last two games, but they are now also suspended for an accumulation of five yellow cards.
Changes are therefore a must for Pellegrino Matarazzo, with the giant Sasa Kalajdzic set to lead the line and Tanguy Coulibaly to replace Silas on the wing. Konstantinos Mavropanos is also expected to come in for Pascal Stenzel on the right of the back three as VfB aims to move into the top half of the table at the halfway point.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf - Coulibaly, Mangala, Endo, Sosa - Castro (c), Didavi - Kalajdzic
Out: Al Ghaddioui (pelvis), Awoudja (Achilles tendon), Gonzalez (suspended), Mola (hip), Silas (suspended)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
