Birmingham City host Brentford at St.Andrew's in a season opener on Saturday, 12 September and the match kicks off at 12:30pm (UK).
This was also the fixture on an opening day in the 2019/20 season, when Birmingham won away from home and went on two win four games out of their first seven fixtures. However, it was a false down as things deteriorated as the season went on. The Blues finished the campaign on a winless streak of fourteen games and ended only two points above the drop zone. In that sense, the appointment of Aitor Karanka seemed bold but positive step in order to steady the ship.
After losing the play-off final Brentford could be forgiven for suffering a bit of a hangover, but more damning for them can be that few star players seem to want to continue their careers somewhere else. However, the fact that they have invested heavily last season to get promoted still remains, and they have still set the bar too high for the most clubs in the Championship.
BIRMINGHAM VS BRENTFORD MATCH ANALYSIS
For Karanka, the biggest worry will be in the attack, where he must find a partner for Lukas Jutkiewitz, who is an excellent target man, if he want to persist with him up front. Of course, losing Jude Bellingham is a bit of a blow, but the money recouped will help bolster the squad for the next season. Otherwise, he can count on a fully fit Dutch, Maikel Kieftenbeld and if they add a few more signings, possibly from Spain, the market he knows so well, they might aspire to something more than the middle of the table.
Of course, there is always some uncertainty when clubs change managers, but the Blues should be alright with Karanka in the dug-out. They have been at the bottom part of the table for four years now, but they could be somewhat of a surprise in this campaign and to finish higher than initially expected won't be unheard of.
At the start of the season, fans will want to know how Brentford will cope without Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, but the Bees' recent activity in the transfer market suggests that they can rest assured as there are plenty of replacements in the squad waiting in the wings. They have already sealed the deal for one of the League's One best strikers, Ivan Toney, and as they are getting ready to move to a whole-new stadium, it looks like they will be top-challengers again.
The Bees were second most dominant team in the league last year. They know how to control games and are brilliant when it comes to creating chances and being in control, so If they repeat the last season's performances they might just go over the line this time. They have now failed to get through the play-offs for the record nine times, but remain strong favorites for automatic promotion this season as well.

Birmingham have a positive head-to-head record against their Saturday's opponent (W5,D5,L3) in thirteen matches they played so far and this match-up has seen more than two goals (2.23) per match when they meet. It remains to be seen if Karanka can instill more positivity in the team, and this game against the top club will be perfect to show bits of progress. Brentford, on the other hand, will stick to the game-plan that worked so well for them for so long and we'll have a terrific game if the team can shake off the rustiness of the pre-season.
