Birmingham host Coventry at the St. Andrew’s (Birmingham) in the 27th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, January 30.
With just six victories and 26 points from 25 games, Aitor Karanka's side are 19th in the standings. After a surprise 1-0 win against play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough last weekend, the Blues felt a renewed sense of vigor. However, it wasn’t meant to last. With a 1-0 home defeat to Preston , the hosts have now lost six league games in a row at St. Andrew's and it is hight time they put a stop to that run. As for their Saturday’s opponents, the Sky Blues suffered a Round 3 FA Cup defeat against Championship leaders Norwich and followed it with a league loss against Reading (3-0) and a 2-0 win against Sheffield Wed. The visitors await this weekend in the 17th place.
Birmingham boss Aitor Karanka has been under pressure to play with more attacking intent with his team continuing to struggle for goals in the Championship. Only one league win in seven matches (D1, L6) has put the Spaniard in a position where he will still have doubts about the change in his players’ mentality. After ending their four-game streak without a goal at Middlesbrough, the Blues will still need more consistency all around.
That showed against Preston, which was another dire night at home for Karanka's men, meaning they have now only picked up a single point from nine home games. Blues’ victory at Middlesbrough last weekend ended a run of six league games without a win but they are now just six points above the bottom-three, having played three games more than 22nd-placed Rotherham. They may deserve to be much higher in the table, but they need to start doing a lot of things right to win games.
Coventry, on the other hand, have been missing from the Championship for eight years and Mark Robins, in his second stint at the club, did an excellent job of leading the team back to the second-tier, and he did so in style. For them, the biggest objective is surely to stay up and anything better than that will be a bonus. Coventry still look like they’re trying to find their feet in their long-awaited return to the second-tier of English football, but are currently six points away from the red zone.
The Sky Blues edged past struggling Owls on Wednesday and extended their unbeaten home run in the Championship to eight games with a win at St Andrew's. The first half was a low-key affair in challenging conditions, with both teams lacking quality and unable to create a chance of note. On-loan Brighton striker Viktor Gyokeres slid home his first goal for the Sky Blues after the break and the hosts wrapped things up, as Jamie Allen’s first goal in almost a year ensured they could breathe easier in the final few minutes.

Interestingly, four of these two treams’ last five matches ended without a winner. The sole point here would certainly feel bettter for the visitors, who have recorded 5 wins to Birmingham’s 10 in their last 20 meetings.
Four of Birmingham’s six victories this season have been against teams in the top nine, with clean sheets in all but one of those matches, and it is the Karanka’s side's ability to upset the bigger clubs that could end up keepind the Spaniard in a dug-out for now.
The visitors, on the other hand, have scored only twice on their last five trips, while conceding nine and if anything, we should expect a tight game with scarce chances on either sides.
