Birmingham host Preston at the St. Andrew's Stadium (Birmingham) in the 25th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, January 20.
BIRMINGHAM VS PRESTON MATCH ANALYSIS
With just six victories and 26 points from 24 games, Aitor Karanka's side are 18th in the standings but will feel a renewed sense of vigor after the latest surprise 1-0 win against play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough at the weekend. On the other hand, the hosts have lost five league games in a row at St. Andrew's. As for Preston, the new signings couldn't make an instant impact at the weekend as they lost 2-0 away from home against Bristol. The Lilywhites have lost back-to-back league games and received a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Wycombe in the FA Cup Round 3 ahead of their trip to the Midlands.
Birmingham boss Aitor Karanka, on the other hand, has been under pressure to play with more attacking intent with his team continuing to struggle for goals in the Championship. Prior to their win at the Riverside, the Blues last won at Bristol and Reading in early December. But a seven-match winless streak (D1, L6) has put the Spaniard in a position where he will still have doubts about the change in his players’ mentality. Nevertheless, his side's ability to upset the bigger clubs will keep the Spaniard in a job, the latest success coming away at Middlesbrough on Saturday. Four of their six victories this season have been against teams in the top nine, with clean sheets in all but one of those matches. Scott Hogan ended a seven-game streak without a goal in scoring the decisive strike at Middlesbrough and the Blues will need more consistency all around.
Preston, on the other hand, will view this contest as the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways in the Championship. Alex Neil's side ended the calendar year with three successive victories, but they have now lost the same amount of games in all competitions since the turn of the year. Now eight points behind the top-six, Neil is aware that only victories will do if his team are to participate in what will be a heated race for the play-offs. Preston have not scored a goal from open play since the early stages of their fixture with Coventry on December 29, a period spanning 342 minutes. Despite their defeat at Bristol, the boss may opt to retain the same starting lineup for this contest.

The sides have clashed a staggering 98 times in history, and the spoils are almost even. Birmingham have won 36 times and Preston have beaten their opponents on 39 occasions. However, Birmingham are looking to complete a league double over Preston for the first time since the 2000/01 campaign as they won 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
