Birmingham host Reading at the St. Andrew's Stadium (Birmingham) in the 37th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, March 17. Read our reasons for Birmingham vs Reading prediction and betting tips.
Birmingham failed to put distance between themselves and Rotherham at the weekend when they were hammered 3-0 by Bristol City at St. Andrew's. Consequently, the Blues are expected to confirm the sacking of head coach Aitor Karanka on Monday. After back-to-back defeats, the home side are just three points clear of the Millers in 22nd place and have played four games more. On the other hand, Reading weren't at their best on Saturday afternoon but did well to rescue a point against Nottingham Forest late on thanks to Yakou Meite's goal. Veljko Paunovic's side are unbeaten in four league games (W3, D1) and remain in play-off contention in 5th, five points clear of Bournemouth in seventh place.
The decision to part ways with the former Real Madrid player means City owners Trillion Trophy Asia are looking for their eighth manager since taking control of the club in October 2016. Blues are in their 10th season in the Championship, following relegation from the Premier League in 2011- the same season they beat Arsenal to win the League Cup at Wembley, the club's greatest honour. In that time, they have finished in the Championship top 10 just three times and have endured relegation battles in five of their 10 seasons back at the second-tier level.
Birmingham have only won eight of their 36 games under Aitor Karanka in the league this season and the 47-year-old has been in charge for less than eight months after succeeding Spanish compatriot Pep Clotet in July. But Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home by Bristol was Birmingham's 12th loss at St Andrew's this season - the worst home record in the division. Blues are three points clear of the relegation zone but have played four more games than 22nd-placed Rotherham.
Meanwhile, Yakou marked his welcome return for Reading after a long, injury-enforced absence with a late equaliser to earn the Royals a point in the game they really should have won. Reading dominated possession, created the best chances, hit the post, and conceded a soft own goal. In short, it was a wasted opportunity for the Royals to strengthen their claim for a place in the play-offs, and a frustrating afternoon for their fans.
However, some results elsewhere went Reading’s way, so the gap between Reading and seventh place widened slightly. Veljko Paunovic’s side now only have ten games remaining in the Championship, and face relegation-threatened Birmingham (21st) at St. Andrews in midweek. A win could see the Royals further cement their playoff spot, but dropping points at this stage is dangerous – particularly with Barnsley hot on their tails.

Birmingham meet Reading looking to complete a league double over Reading for the first time since the 2015-16 season under Gary Rowett after a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture at the Madejski Stadium in December.
Only Luton (8) have scored fewer Championship goals than Birmingham (9) in 2021, with the Blues losing eight of those matches (W3, D3). Meanwhile, Reading have won three of their last four away league matches against Birmingham City (L1) and are unbeaten in their last four league games, keeping a clean sheet in three of those matches.
With Birmingham’s worst home record in the Championship, we can’t see them taking the whole three points here, but expect a change of managers to make them a little harder to beat.
The Bettingkick’s Birmingham vs Reading prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
