Blackpool host Oxford at the Bloomfield Road (Blackpool) in the second leg of the League One Promotion Play-Off Semi-finals and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Friday, May 21. Read our reasons for Blackpool vs Oxford prediction and betting tips.
Blackpool have one foot in the League One play-off final after Ellis Simms struck twice in a stunning 3-0 win at Oxford. The Seasiders scored twice in three minutes midway through the first half of the semi-final first leg, with Simms adding his second on the break late on. Blackpool are now in a very strong position with the second leg to come at Bloomfield Road on Friday. On the other hand, it’s only half-time and Oxford have enough quality in their squad to come back. They were the third-highest scorers in the division and they are certainly capable of scoring goals at Blackpool’s place.
As the first leg leads go, especially when the opening tie is away from home, leads don’t come much more emphatic than this. It must be noted though that if there’s any side in the play-offs that are capable of coming back from the dead and turning around a three-goal deficit, it’s Oxford. Karl Robinson’s side are the top scorers out of the four and scored 24 goals in their last seven games of the season, which helped them snatch a play-off spot on the final day. But on the same hand, if there’s one side in League One who are capable of stopping anyone, it’s Blackpool.
They’ve yet to concede against the U’s this season in four-and-a-half hours of football and finished the campaign with the league’s meanest defence, conceding just 37 goals in 46 games. And while Oxford were on a fine run of form prior to Tuesday night’s first leg, Blackpool aren’t exactly doing too bad themselves - winning five straight games without conceding a goal. The Seasiders have only let in two goals in their last nine games, so the chances of them conceding three in one game seem slim. But stranger things have happened.
As for Oxford, The U’s, who had qualified for the play-offs with a run of seven wins in their last nine games, were on the front foot from the start, encouraged by 3,200 socially distanced fans back in the Kassam Stadium for the first time in months. However, the early quickfire double knocked the stuffing out of the U’s and Karl Robinson’s team had not recovered from that blow. Oxford did cause Blackpool problems at the Kassam and created two or three good openings, but the clearer-cut chances fell to Neil Critchley’s men, who were ruthless when opportunities came their way.
Oxford continued to rally, but their heads well and truly dropped when Simms added Pool’s third with his second of the evening. Pool saw out the remainder of the game with the professionalism and discipline we’ve come to expect of them. Oxford’s night, meanwhile, went from bad to worse, as both Cameron Brannagan and Sam Winnall limped off with hamstring injuries. United will be hugely disappointed they could not get a result for their returning fans. All is not lost, but despite Oxford’s goal-scoring abilities, the Tangerines are now overwhelming favourites to reach the Wembley final.

Blackpool meet Oxford having kept a clean sheet in their last three matches against the U’s this season (W2, D1). Having more shots on target against the Tangerines than anyone else without scoring (7) United will feel really hard-done. Blackpool have considerably more play-off experience though, having reached this stage nine times compared to Oxford’s two. Tangerines’ defensive record is impeccable and the Pool will look to contain the visitors again.
