Bologna is without a win in eight and hosts a Hellas Verona side with seven points from the last three rounds.
The Rossoblu are in crisis mode and sliding down the standings, as although they have drawn five of their last six Serie A games, they are also without a win since November 29. Last week’s 2-0 defeat to Genoa plunged them right back into the danger zone. Sinisa Mihajlovic was furious after the ‘unexpected’ 2-0 defeat to Genoa, as after acknowledged his players need to score more, he hit out at the ‘shameful’ pitch. The turf at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris had already been choppy during heavy rain in the midweek game when Sampdoria beat Inter 2-1 but seemed even worse this evening. “It is shameful that in the 21st Century we are forced to play Serie A games on this pitch. It was like a vegetable patch,” said the coach to the media after the game.
Bologna dominated possession and pushed forward constantly, but was toothless, while Miha Zajc and Mattia Destro pounced on defensive errors. “It was not a defeat I expected. I was convinced we would bring the points home. I didn’t take the pitch into account, but then it’s always been bad here, even when I was the coach of Sampdoria. It’s better for vegetables than football.” Bologna has been firing blanks lately and Mihajlovic acknowledges it’s an issue. “I said a few weeks ago that we’d be in the battle to avoid relegation and people said I was crazy, but I could see it coming. We have to get to 40 points as soon as possible and I’m not sure 40 points will be enough this season to guarantee safety.”

Verona, on the other hand, has improved lately and secured narrow victories over Spezia and Crotone and a draw vs Torino thanks to some spectacular solo efforts. Verona confirmed their tendency to score high-quality goals, as Federico Dimarco completed a sweeping team move to beat Crotone. Nikola Kalinic had broken the deadlock by running onto an inspired Antonin Barak assist. Dimarco’s second seemed easier than it was, as he combined with Mattia Zaccagni down the left and surprised the goalkeeper with a delicate finish off the outside of the left boot. Crotone did get a consolation goal with Junior Messias on the volley, but Ebrima Colley rattled the woodwork in stoppages.
There are reports Kevin Lasagna will leave Udinese in January, with Hellas Verona interested in the 28-year-old center-forward who has seven senior caps for Italy and his contract with the Friulani runs to June 2023. He has struggled to fit into the current tactical set-up, scoring two goals in 14 Serie A appearances this season. Lasagna scored 35 goals in 151 Serie A games during his career. He would be a huge boost for Verona attacking options.

Verona has not beaten Bologna in Serie A since April 2016, managing just two draws and two defeats. Maybe it is time for Bologna to finally exploit their performances and earn a big three points to avoid a relegation battle.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
