Borussia M.Gladbach are currently in the 7th position in the Bundesliga, with aim of qualifying again for this competition. They overcame a difficult group facing the likes of giants Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Shakhtar Donestk, but are about to face their hardest challenge of facing the most in-form team in Europe. Meanwhile, Man City are currently the most dangerous team in Europe, with potential favorites for all competitions. They are the leaders of the English Premier League, qualified for the EFL Cup final, FA Cup quarterfinalist, and expected to breeze past the round of 16 against B. Monchengladbach.
While City eased into the last 16 as Group C winners, recording five victories in their six matches and conceding only one goal, Gladbach finished second behind Real Madrid in a tight Group B to reach the knockout stages for the first time in only their third campaign in the UEFA Champions League. The teams' only previous knockout tie came in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, Gladbach winning 4-2 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy.
Monchengladbach are having a disappointing season in the Bundesliga, with their hopes of qualifying for next year’s European elite competition in tatters. Gladbach are not in great form heading into Wednesday's first leg against Man City. The Bundesliga outfit are winless in three (D1, L2) and are hoping to better their previous CL campaigns as both previous occasions – in 2015/16 and 2016/17 – ended in group stage elimination.
On the other hand, City are in the round of 16 for the eighth season running and have won their last three ties at this stage. The team has been aided with the return of matchwinners like De Bruyne and Aguero, with City hoping to overcome their last season’s disappointing exit against Olympique Lyon. City had finished first in their group with 14 points (W4, D2) before seeing off Real Madrid in the last 16.
The Cityzens will try to reach the finals for the first time ever in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign after they have been involved every season since 2011/12. With a win here, City can record the 19th straight win in all competitions when they travel to Hungary to take on M.Gladbach. And with Gundogan, plus Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero ready to roll and John Stones and Ruben Dias expected to lead the backline, City’s playmakers and defense are looking imperious and it’s hard to see them drop too many points this season.
