Brentford host Bournemouth at the Brentford Community Stadium (London) in the second leg of the Championship Promotion Play-Off Semi-Final and the match kicks off at 12.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, May 22. Read our reasons for Brentford vs Bournemouth prediction and betting tips.
Thomas Frank feels this tie is very much alive as Brentford head back to TW8 on Saturday looking to turn around a one goal deficit following Monday’s first leg at The Vitality Stadium. Arnaut Danjuma struck the only goal ten minutes after the break as Bournemouth took the advantage in the tie. However, reflecting on the game, Thomas felt his side showed they have more than enough to get back into it in front of The Bees fans this weekend.
Arnaut Danjuma's second-half goal has earned Bournemouth a narrow 1-0 advantage over Brentford in the first leg of their Championship promotion play-off semi-final. With a limited but vociferous crowd inside the Vitality Stadium, the south coast club struck in the 55th minute when Dutchman Danjuma found the back of the net. Brentford, beaten in last year's play-off final by Fulham after squandering a chance to gain automatic promotion, searched for an equaliser and should have grabbed one but forward Bryan Mbeumo somehow failed to convert Christian Norgaard's low cross.
Third-placed Brentford had been the form team leading into the playoffs with four successive league wins, while The Cherries, who finished sixth lost their last three of the regular season. But now The Bees face a nervous second leg at their own stadium if they are to maintain their hopes of a return to the top flight for the first time since 1947. On the other hand, Bournemouth are looking to bounce back at the first opportunity after being relegated from the Premier League last season after a five-year stay.
Cherries boss Jonathan Woodgate claimed his side were the underdogs going into the play-offs. But now they need only avoid defeat in Saturday’s second leg to reach the final. Bournemouth had the better of a cagey first half and Dominic Solanke headed against the outside of the post from a Lloyd Kelly cross. Brentford keeper David Raya kept out Steve Cook’s header just before half-time, with Ivan Toney on hand to block David Brooks’ follow-up effort. The pressure paid off 10 minutes into the second half as Dutch winger Danjuma started and finished a clinical counter-attack.
Even though the tie is far from over, The Cherries created the better chances in the game and going in at half-time they could have been a couple of goals up. Cherries were outstanding on the counter-attack, were compact behind the ball and then broke at speed, broke at pace, which Bournemouth have in abundance with the players they got. Brentford finished three places and 10 points above Cherries in the Championship table, but the tables have turned and it is Woodgate's side who take the momentum and the lead into the weekend.

Brentford meet Bournemouth having suffered their 12th loss in the Football League play-offs after a first-leg loss to The Cherries, equaling the record total of defeats in the play-offs since their formation in 1987, level with Preston North End. Three of the last five Championship sides to lose the first leg of the play-offs away from home have then progressed to the final so the Bees still have a decent chance.
Brentford one of only two teams to complete the league double over the Cherries in 2020/21. The Bees can't really afford another season at this level with key players likely looking to move on without Premier League Football, but they are experienced, and that gives them a chance.
