Brentford host Cardiff at the Brentford Community Stadium (London) in the 43rd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 6 pm (UK) on Tuesday, April 20. Read our reasons for Brentford vs Cardiff prediction and betting tips.
The Bees let themselves down on Saturday when held to a goalless draw by Millwall but results elsewhere mean automatic promotion to the Premier League is still a distant possibility. Thomas Frank said he was 100 per cent sure it will go down to the last round or two of games, and that the Bees remain focused only on their next game against Cardiff. The Bluebirds are now struggling to make the play-offs, after failing to make Kieffer Moore's late penalty stick on Friday evening, as a late Reading goal sent Mick McCarthy's side back to Wales with just a point. The Bluebirds have failed to win any of their last four league games, drawing and losing twice.
After ending a run of four straight draws in emphatic style at Deepdale, winning 5-0 at Preston, Thomas Frank Frank insisted his Brentford side will keep fighting until the end of the Championship season to sneak into the automatic promotion places. However, their ambitions took a huge blow after failing to get the maximum points against Millwall at home the weekend, reverting back to the trend with a goalless draw at the Community Stadium.
That result left the Bees nine points behind second-placed Watford with a game in hand and the Hornets are now the favourites for the second spot behind leaders Norwich. Frustrated head coach Thomas Frank blamed luck, fine margins and a lack of quality in front of goal for his side’s failure to beat the Blues and all but conceded that automatic promotion now looks like a longshot and that it is now only Watford’s to lose.
On the other hand, Cardiff looked capable of a promotion push after a revival under new boss McCarthy led to a run of seven wins and a draw in eight games, but after recording only one win from eight games (D4, L3), City now have no chance of making the play-offs, and the former Ireland boss claimed his side were bitterly disappointed after conceding another late goal against Reading to earn just a 1-1 draw. The Bluebirds are now eleven points off the play-off places with four games remaining.
And even if the Bluebirds could dramatically improve the form that has bought them one win in eight games, manager McCarthy knows it would take an unfeasible collapse of their rivals for them to make the top six. Cardiff will look to the fact that they have scored in their last 18 league games against Brentford since losing 1-0 back in December 1998, but with realistic hopes of making the play-offs appearing to have gone, it looks as the Bluebirds are readying themselves for a summer of rebuilding.

Brentford meet Cardiff looking to complete their first league double over Cardiff since the 1994-95 season after celebrating a 3-2 victory in Wales in the reverse fixture in December. However, both of Brentford’s last two home league matches have finished goalless, and the Bees last played out three straight home league goalless draws in January 1997.
Although it seems Brentford’s Premier League hopes may rest on a successful play-offs campaign for the second successive season, it's worrying to see Brentford back to their offensive woes at the wrong time. On the other hand, McCarthy may have to go back to the drawing board as his team, who were once knocking down all that was put in front of them, are now running into brick walls.
