Brighton are now unbeaten in their last six top-flight matches - winning three and drawing three, with five clean sheets to boot. Their survival bid is gathering pace, and their results are starting to reflect the nature of their performances as they sit 7 points clear of the drop zone in 16th after a goalless draw at home against Aston Villa. As for Crystal Palace, They are 14th in the Premier League standings and still have a healthy ten-point gap to the relegation zone, although Hodgson will be looking for his team to get to the 40 point mark as soon as possible.
A winless December may have had Brighton boss Potter looking over his shoulder, but four wins in their past seven games in all competitions (D2, L1) - including five clean sheets - suggests the Seagulls are well on their way to find the form they need to pull away from the bottom. On the other hand, the absence of Wilfred Zaha not only takes away the biggest attacking threat Crystal Palace can rely upon, but it also seems to make them lack some confidence in their abilities. Much of that was on display last week as Roy Hodgson watched his men beaten 0-3 by Burnley, which means Palace have now lost 18 of the past 20 games in which Zaha has not played, including all five Premier League matches without him this season.
Without that magic from their best player, Crystal Palace have looked short of ideas and confidence and it has seen them lose back-to-back games without scoring a goal. Any derby can produce some strange results, and while the form guide may be pointing in one direction, Crystal Palace did win here last season (1-0) and were minutes away from beating Brighton at home earlier in this campaign (1-1). Roy Hodgson has had plenty of time to work with the players he has available and, despite a long injury list, he will be looking for improved performance than has been seen in the last two league games.
