Brighton host Newcastle at The Amex Stadium (Brighton) in the 29th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Saturday, March 20. Read our reasons for Brighton vs Newcastle prediction and betting tips.
It is a pretty big game for both sides given their respective places in the table – 16th and 17th – with just a point separating them there, and almost certainly goes into the category of a ‘six-pointer’ as we approach the business end of the season. Brighton come into it on the back of a massive 2-1 win at St. Mary’s against Southampton, while Newcastle may go into it with a little spring in their step too, following their last-minute draw against Aston Villa last Friday night.
Brighton sit a few points above the relegation zone and could be in the bottom three if Fulham beat Leeds on Friday and Newcastle beat them on Saturday. Conversely, they could go six points clear of the drop zone with a win at the Amex and Marcelo Bielsa's side down Fulham at Craven Cottage. But Brighton's problems will not go anywhere unless they are more clinical, collectively. In every aspect of the game, including from open play, corners, set pieces, direct free-kicks, and penalties, Brighton have underperformed.
However, Sunday's 2-1 win over Southampton was a timely reminder that they are capable of securing vital wins and they proved they didn't need to do it by dominating possession and chances. In fact, in only one of their six wins, the exception being the 3-0 victory over Newcastle, Brighton have gone onto claim the three points when having less possession than their opponent. This more pragmatic approach has worked and it needs to be utilised more, starting on Saturday against the Magpies.
Newcastle, meanwhile, rescued a last-gasp equaliser to draw 1-1 with Aston Villa last weekend just as it looked like they had been beaten by a late goal, with Ollie Watkins’ header looping in off defender Ciaran Clark. A third successive draw could prove to be a vital point but Steve Bruce’s side are still missing key players and have now won only twice in 19 games in all competitions. However, Captain Jamaal Lascelles insists there is enough talent in the squad to avoid the drop.
The Magpies feel confident, at least in interviews. They should have enough quality, it’s just the final pass or the final decision or the final run. If Steve Bruce’s men can get that right and just keep battling on, with a fair few games to go they can certainly avoid the drop. Every game is like a cup final now and that’s the attitude the Magpies need to have going into every game. They must go down to Brighton, try to get a win and after the international break, reset and go again.

Brighton meet Newcastle previously unbeaten in all seven of their Premier League meetings with the Magpies (W3, D4) and are looking to secure their first league double over Newcastle since the 1978/79 campaign in the second tier after a convincing 3-0 victory at St. James’ Park in September.
Sheffield Utd and West Brom already look doomed but the Seagulls and the Magpies are both in danger of filling the third relegation place. Albion’s performances have been more encouraging so the whole three points for a home side here would not surprise us.
