The 1st qualifying round match for the Group stage of the UEFA Champions League between Budućnost and Ludogorets will be played on Wednesday evening at Gradski stadion in Podgorica without an audience because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Montenegrin champions failed to please the fans in the first round of the new season, Dečić, the team that was the winner of the Second League in last season defeated Budućnost 2-0. The most dominant side in Montenegro in the 2019/2020 championship played below expectations and was deservedly punished. That was not a good introduction for the match vs Ludogorets but it is still early to make statements after one game.
Budućnost had a very turbulent period in which the previous championship was interrupted and continued, and then not played till the end due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The negative impression can certainly be corrected quickly in the domestic league where they have a big derby on Sunday with the biggest rivals and second-placed team from the last season Sutjeska. The time for big changes is short but also this defeat may have some positive effects in the sense that Budućnost must be sure not to relax at any point. They are already focused on that challenge where they have to play the best game in their careers, individually or as a team, to pass through the next round.
Coach Mladen Milinković will try to build the right team without the best player in Montenegrin club football in the last season Draško Božović who is suspended because of the red card and Velizar Janketić is out because of an ankle injury. He will also have the privilege to choose players he wants on the pitch without age restrictions because in the Montenegrin championship he must play with two under 21 players at any time.
Bulgarian football champions Ludogorets was founded 75 years ago and was relatively unknown until 2010, when the "crazy forest" as their nickname is, was taken over by the pharmaceutical magnate Kiril Domuschiev. As a big fan of football and as a respectable businessman, he built a football empire in the next ten years.
Ludogorets entered the elite from the Second League in the first season, and then he was the state champion nine times (from 2011 to 2020), winning two Cups (2012, 2014), four Super Cups ( 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019), and they participated in European cups six times.
Ludogorets played the Group stage of the UCL (2014/15, 2016/17), and in the UEL they reached the Group stage (2018/19), 1/8 finals (2013/14), and three times they were in last-16 rounds (2016/17, 2017/18, 2019/20). They played with Montenegrin champions Mladost at the beginning of the 2016/17 and easily went to 2nd round of qualifications for the UCL with a 5-0 aggregate.
The coach of Ludogorets is the Czech Pavel Vrba, who unexpectedly succeeded Stoycho Stoev during the winter break. They won the Bulgarian League in a very dominant manner with 18 wins, 8 draws, and no defeats. Main players as goalkeeper Plamen Iliev, defenders Anton Nedyalkov, Georgi Terziev who was injured in the last match in the domestic league, Jordan Ikoko, midfielder Dan Biton (21 games, five goals), well-known veteran Vanderson (22 games, five goals), strikers Jakub Swierzok (21 games, six goals), Jorghino (22 games, seven goals), Claudio Keseru (19 games, 12 goals) and Marcelinho (16 games, five goals) stayed in the club and only Mavis Dufunu (25 games, seven goals) will not be part of Ludogorets after this transfer window.
Vrba rotated the team at the beginning of the championship due to injuries and possible problems with the coronavirus and that was the main cause for defeat in the first round of the new season but they won 3-0 during the weekend vs Slavia Sofia in the second round of the domestic championship. Ludogorets has a defensive injury crisis because they have only two healthy central defenders and that is major concern before the match in Podgorica.

Ludogorets coach Pavel Vrba is under the pressure after an early loss vs Botev and the media in Bulgaria reported that he will be fired if his team doesn’t pass Budućnost at the start of the qualifications for the UCL. New players need time to adapt and show their qualities but it is a popular opinion in Montenegro and Bulgaria that Ludogorets have all the necessary tools for away win. An early goal for visitors could be crucial for multiple goals in the home team net.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
