Leonardo Semplici made the ideal debut on the Cagliari bench and now tries to build some momentum against a Bologna side finding their form. Read our reasons for Cagliari vs Bologna prediction and betting tips.
The new coach immediately got the Sardinians back to their first victory since November 7 in a relegation showdown with Crotone, but remain in the bottom three. Leonardo Semplici revealed how he got Cagliari to finally register their first win since November 7, beating Crotone 2-0. ‘It was more psychological work than tactical.’ The former SPAL boss made the ideal debut after replacing sacked Eusebio Di Francesco, as the Sardinians snatched all three points in this relegation dogfight at the Stadio Scida with Leonardo Pavoletti’s header and a Joao Pedro penalty. “My desire to return coincided with this important opportunity. Cagliari’s position in the table wasn’t the best, but looking at the names in the squad, I was confident we could do well,” the coach told media. “We started with some difficulties, I think due to the moment in the table, but I liked the unity of the side, the solidity and the determination they showed, especially after we went down to 10 men.’’
Sometimes, just simple things can make a significant change. ‘’Both our strikers were on target, it was important to start on the right foot. It was more psychological work than tactical, with a series of meetings with the group as well as individuals. We had to treat these next 15 games as a new season entirely. It’s not easy, having a squad of this quality with so few points means there have been problems, but I think we can draw out the best in these players and what they had shown until recently.”

More is needed to get the better of Bologna, who are unbeaten in four and fresh from defeating Lazio 2-0 but have to reshuffle their defense. Sinisa Mihajlovic admits he did not expect Bologna to beat Lazio 2-0, as they were missing half their defense, but everything went well.’ Just 80 seconds after Lukasz Skorupski saved Ciro Immobile’s penalty, the Rossoblu went up the other end and scored with Ibrahima Mbaye, before Nicola Sansone added another with a splendid volley. “It was a good performance, and after Immobile had the penalty saved and Ibra Mbaye scored, I said, it’s impossible we lose this now!” Mihajlovic told the media, referring to Mbaye's lack of career goals. “All joking aside, we played well, could’ve scored more on the counter, and in general I am very happy. We controlled the ball well, closed up the spaces, and pressed Lazio hard. We are a team who play football and put in the performance. We aren’t always determined enough to convert the chances, but we attack and have a lot of quality on the side. Sometimes we concede on an error or waste chances, but today everything went well.”
Bologna had not beaten one of the top teams yet this season and Mihajlovic admits he was surprised. “We knew that sooner or later we’d have to beat one of the big clubs. Perhaps I expected it less today than any other, as we had to change half the defense and the full-backs are particularly important for attacking as well as defending. Lollo De Silvestri and Mbaye had great games filling in. Both Mbaye and Sansone had injuries, so they lacked consistency during the season. Ibra always works hard when he’s able to and he had a great game on the left, whereas he’s more of a right-back. There are many games to go, we spent six weeks with seven to 10 players out injured, now they’re almost all back, let’s try to see what we can do. Our objective is to secure safety because this is a strange season, but once we do that, we can think about other targets. With this attitude, I’m sure we’ll do it.”

Suspended: Danilo
Injured: Santander, Medel, Tomiyasu, Baldursson, Faragò

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
