Sunday’s action in Italian Serie A is starting with an interesting clash at Sardinia where Cagliari welcomes Inter Milan.
Cagliari is in the middle of a frustrating search for consistency this season. Eusebio Di Francesco’s team hasn’t gone more than three games without defeat in Serie A this season thanks largely to their leaky defense, which has conceded the third-highest number of goals (20) in the Italian top flight so far. To make matters worse, they have won just one of their last eight meetings with this weekend’s visitors, with all the omens pointing to their latest three-game unbeaten streak being ended.
There were remarkably only two goals at the Bentegodi, as Hellas Verona and Cagliari rattled the woodwork and forced tough saves. Samuel Di Carmine saw his early goal disallowed for offside after a chaotic move that saw the ball bounce off both the crossbar and the upright. Hellas did get the breakthrough with Mattia Zaccagni, who came sliding onto a Marco Davide Faraoni cross. Cagliari got back on level terms with Razvan Marin’s debut Serie A goal, dribbling through a crowd of defenders. Leonardo Pavoletti had several chances, including a glancing header saved from point-blank range.
Cagliari's Ragnar Klavan and Zito Luvumbo remain out through injury and veteran Diego Godin is absent due to another positive COVID-19 test, but Giovanni Simeone and Uruguayan pair Nahitan Nandez and Gaston Pereiro have recovered and may be able to feature at some stage. Gabriele Zappa, Joao Pedro, and Riccardo Sottil should start behind Leonardo Pavoletti upfront, but 'Cholito' Simeone could even press his deputy for a start.
Cagliari (4-2-3-1): Alessio Cragno; Paolo Farago, Sebastian Walukiewicz, Charalampos Lykogiannis; Razvan Marin, Marko Rog; Gabriele Zappa, Joao Pedro, Riccardo Sottil; Leonardo Pavoletti
Despite crashing out of the Champions League (and European football as a whole after finishing bottom of Group B), Antonio Conte’s men have been in fine domestic form, losing just one of their opening 10 league games and scoring more goals (26) than any other Serie A team. Inter had some chances, rattling the crossbar with Lautaro Martinez and forcing a save with Romelu Lukaku, but the 0-0 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk was not enough and they crashed out of Europe. With no continental distractions, Inter fans will be expecting a serious title challenge from their side this season and if the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez can keep firing, there’s no doubting they can overhaul AC Milan and wrestle for the title with perennial winners, Juventus.
Visiting manager Antonio Conte must decide between Lautaro Martinez - who has not hit the net in his past five outings - and Alexis Sanchez to partner the dependable Romelu Lukaku, though the Anderlecht academy graduate may even be given a rest ahead of a packed pre-Christmas schedule. Midfielders Radja Nainggolan - on his return to his former club - Arturo Vidal and Matias Vecino remain out due to injury for Inter, while Nicolo Barella played through an ankle injury on Wednesday and may do so again in Sardinia.
Inter Milan (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Achraf Hakimi, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Roberto Gagliardini, Ashley Young; Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez

Inter just keep misfiring but their overall performances, ball possession, creativity are on the highest possible level. They will now focus only on Serie A and they must win the next match.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
