Cagliari aims to build on their positive run against Roma, who might have one eye on the Europa League semi-final next week. Read our reasons for Cagliari vs Roma prediction and betting tips.
The Rossoblu arrive from back-to-back wins against Parma and Udinese. Cagliari coach Leonardo Semplici said the 1-0 win against Udinese was a ‘great satisfaction’ and praised Brazilian forward Joao Pedro. Cagliari sits three points behind Benevento and Torino in the relegation battle and Joao Pedro’s goal against the Friuli secured back-to-back wins for Semplici’s men. “We put down a great performance against a strong team, on a pitch where Atalanta and Inter had drawn,” Semplici told the media. “Having given continuity and winning while suffering is a great satisfaction.”
The former SPAL coach said Cagliari ‘shouldn’t be in this position’, as they sit 18th after 32 games. “This team shouldn’t be in this position, but if we play with this humility, the performances will come,” he said. “We have the players with important technical qualities.” Joao Pedro was again vital for the Casteddu and Semplici said the Brazilian is ‘one of the best’ at the Rossoblu. “There are several,” he continued. “But he is for sure one of the best. But there are also others.” Semplici continued to talk about his relationship with Radja Nainggolan. “We have an excellent relationship with him as with the others, otherwise you wouldn’t get these performances,” the coach said. “Radja is our balance, he can play in many positions and when he does it in this way, he shifts the balance and gives us a big hand.”
Cagliari (3-5-2): Vicario; Rugani, Godin, Carboni; Zappa, Deiola, Marin, Duncan, Nandez; Pavoletti, Joao Pedro
Suspended: Nainggolan
Injured: Rog, Sottil, Cragno
Roma coach Paulo Fonseca is expected to rest some key players when the Giallorossi travel to Sardinia but will recover several players for the trip to England on Thursday. La Lupa sits eight in Serie A and 10 points behind the top four, which means their biggest chance of qualifying for the Champions League will be to secure a place through the Europa League, where Manchester United awaits in the last four. Roma hasn’t lost to Cagliari in Serie A since February 2013, but arrives after a poor run in the league, with only one win from their last seven away games. Paulo Fonseca was content with Roma’s 1-1 draw against 10-man Atalanta, assuring nobody truly dominates La Dea. The Giallorossi were grateful that their opponents wasted so many scoring opportunities, as after Robin Gosens saw red, Bryan Cristante was able to cancel out the Ruslan Malinovskyi opener. “Playing against these teams is difficult, but we made mistakes in the decisive moments,” confessed Fonseca to the media. “We didn’t win, but we did put in a good performance against a great team. Don’t forget, Atalanta won eight of their last nine games coming in and we decided to risk with a high press, not allowing Atalanta to build their moves in the usual way. We played better in the second half and the team showed character. I haven’t seen any team take on Atalanta and dominate possession.”
Borja Mayoral came on for the final stages as a partner to Edin Dzeko, but Fonseca warns that won’t be seen from the start. “We already tried and it didn’t work. The team is not ready to play with two center-forwards. It’s not important how many strikers you use, but also the players who create the moves. We have only one day to prepare every game and can’t afford such a big change.” Roma has little time to prepare for the Europa League semi-final with Manchester United either. “We played against Ajax and didn’t see much of the ball, but we had more of the ball than Atalanta in the first half today. Controlling the game is important to me.”
Roma (3-4-2-1): Mirante; Mancini, Cristante, Fazio; Reynolds, Villar, Veretout, Bruno Peres; Carles Perez, Mkhitaryan; Borja Mayoral
Suspended: Ibanez
Injured: Zaniolo, Pedro, Calafiori

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
