Cagliari and Sampdoria will use their Saturday meeting to improve their performances and try to find points to stabilize their position at the table.
Cagliari coach Eusebio Di Francesco was frustrated once again as his team twice fumbled a lead to lose 3-2 at Bologna. As ex Roma coach stated ‘we can’t score four goals every game to get points’, defensive troubles are still the main reason for concern and a big obstacle for Cagliari to turn good performances into points and a better place in the standings.
The Sardinians twice took the lead at the Stadio Dall’Ara with Joao Pedro and Giovanni Simeone, only to be overturned by Roberto Soriano and a Musa Barrow brace. Without outstanding goalkeeper Cragno, Cagliari would be in much more trouble, because their defense is allowing shots away far too easily. Cagliari has started to show some good work going forward, but they have to defend too, and transitions after the lost ball and defensive movement are not good at all.
Cagliari keeps giving leads away, something that is unacceptable if they want to reach their ambitions to avoid relegation battles and try to join safe mid-table positions. The good news is that Nahitan Nandez continues to impress in various roles, including as part of the supporting trio behind Cholito Simeone. Through him, Cagliari created superiority on the right flank but didn’t make the most of that. Too many misplaced passes when going on the counter costed them to be more dangerous.
Cagliari was constantly in the rival half but didn’t finish scoring opportunities. Simeone had a knock, while Joao Pedro was moving well between the lines, so by introducing Leonardo Pavoletti they had a bonus option and physical presence. It is obvious that they need to find a balance, and that could be difficult against the side that has beaten mighty Atalanta.
Sampdoria should be satisfied with the start of the season but their coach Claudio Ranieri believes his team deserved more in the second half of the Derby Della Lanterna draw with Genoa. Jakub Jankto had put the Blucerchiati in front, it was canceled out by Gianluca Scamacca, and Keita Balde Diao hit the upright late on. Samp had won three consecutive Serie A matches before this goalscoring 1-1 draw, but remain comfortably mid-table on 10 points from six rounds.
The only defeats they suffered were at the start, 3-0 away to Juventus, and 2-3 against Benevento in a game when they had a two-goal advantage. That horrible performance in Torino was awful and that sparked a reaction from Ranieri towards the players. He wanted to test their mentality, was harsh in the media, and challenged them to show what they got when playing on the maximum. After the second match in the season, it was obvious that this team can be far more dangerous but defensive errors cost them at the moment.
They used the transfer window with Keita Balde signing and after that Samp played some great football. Balde hasn’t been training with them for long because of the coronavirus, so he’ll slowly be able to play the 90 minutes, and the idea then is to play him with Fabio Quagliarella or with Keita out wide to use his speed and playmaking abilities.
The potential is there, but after last season struggles to stay in the league, the experienced manager has only one objective, to achieve 40 points and safety as soon as possible. Match with Cagliari can show are they on the right path.

It should be a very interesting match with teams that can create and be dangerous in the final third in different ways. Both teams to score is a reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
