Cagliari has six defeats in a row as they host a Sassuolo side who won just one of the last five Serie A games.
Eusebio Di Francesco is ‘proud’ to have signed a contract extension with Cagliari. ‘Now I want to repay the club’s trust.’ The Sardinians are involved in the relegation race with 14 points in 19 games, but President Tommaso Giulini has revealed the club extended their contract with their coach earlier this week. “I am sorry I couldn’t repay their trust today,” Di Francesco told media after Cagliari lost 1-0 at Genoa. “I’m proud I was judged for my competencies and my professionalism, but this does not justify our results, I hope I can repay their trust," he added. “We didn’t do well in the first 15 minutes, we conceded an early goal, but we created many opportunities to level the game. We still need to improve, the 4-2-3-1 is the best system for our players right now, I believe it’s the best solution and it’s proved by the opportunities we created. Today we must talk about results, we are missing something, especially on a psychological level.”
Cagliari has signed Radja Nainggolan and Alfred Duncan in January and they are still active on the transfer market. “I like to play with two strikers, but Pavoletti is not always fit, this week he’s had problems at his back, today he wasn’t 100%. We’ll see what will happen in the last days of the January transfer window if nobody leaves I’ll manage the three strikers I have.” Eusebio Di Francesco again recovers Leonardo Pavoletti after an injury, but the striker is expected to start on the bench. Naithan Nandez is suspended and both Zito Luuvumbo and Marko Rog are on the sidelines with injuries.
Cagliari (4-3-3): Cragno; Zappa, Ceppitelli, Godin, Lykogiannis; Nainggolan, Marin, Duncan; Joao Pedro, Sottil; Simeone
Suspended: Nandez
Injured: Luvumbo, Rog
Roberto De Zerbi was again left frustrated by Sassuolo fumbling a lead to Lazio and won’t ‘consider’ leaving for a bigger club. The Neroverdi had started very strong and taken the lead within six minutes thanks to Ciccio Caputo, but Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile turned the game on its head. Their form has fallen away in recent weeks, with just one point from the last three rounds. “Lazio are a very strong team. We had a few chances to score more goals in the first half, we didn’t take them and then suffered from their physicality. For example, their equalizer was a header on a set play,” the coach told the media.
Sassuolo came out fighting at the Stadio Olimpico and was dominant in the first 20 minutes, but then fell away. “We amassed 30 points in the first half of the season, lost five games only to those teams who are above us in the table. So we’ve done well, could’ve done better, but considering all the problems we had, we are on track. The collective is a combination of various individual players and their characteristics. I don’t want to look for excuses, but the truth is that we had a lot of injuries to players in attack who make the difference. When Domenico Berardi, Jeremie Boga, and Francesco Caputo are out for weeks at a time or not fully fit, that will affect the team performance.”
Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Muldur, Chiriches, G Ferrari, Rogerio; Locatelli, Obiang; Traore, Djuricic, Boga; Caputo
Suspended: none
Injured: Romagna, Bourabia, Berardi, Schiappacasse

Cagliari has never won at the Sardegna Arena against Sassuolo. Their only two home wins came at the Sant’Elia. The most recent one is dated back to December 2016. Both teams to score looks like a good betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
