Cagliari is desperate for points as they host a Verona side who are close to the 40-point mark despite three defeats in a row. Read our reasons for Cagliari vs Verona prediction and betting tips.
Cagliari has seven points in five games with Leonardo Semplici in the dug-out. They sit one point behind 17th-placed Torino, but the Granata have one game in hand. Leonardo Semplici felt Cagliari ‘did not deserve to lose’ their dramatic 2-1 defeat to Spezia, but they ‘missed two absolute sitters.’ The Sardinians remain in the bottom three after this chaotic loss, but they had the opportunities to equalize both at 1-0 and 2-1. “It was a good first-half performance, but unfortunately at the first indecision after the restart, we conceded a goal, and that complicated everything,” Semplici told media. “Then we missed two absolute sitters with Pereiro and Simeone and Spezia scored their second goal. We didn’t give in, we tried everything and the lads gave their all, but you cannot get away with certain errors in these games.”
The Simeone miss was particularly astonishing, as he fired both high and wide from close range. “We knew that we were up against a Spezia side that would press high and we were the better team in the first half, but that means nothing without a goal to show for it. We couldn’t afford to lose today, but we lost. “Now we have to go forward and work even harder. When we have the ball, we can do damage, so the team is attacking, but we still make too many mistakes in defense. “It’s a difficult situation looking at the table, but our destiny is in our hands.”

Atalanta surprised everyone with a new 4-2-3-1 formation and it worked wonders, sweeping Verona aside with Ruslan Malinovskyi and Duvan Zapata goals. Apprentice Ivan Juric beat the master Gian Piero Gasperini when these sides met in November, but the Croatian coach was in the stands due to a touchline ban. A brave Adrien Tameze block prevented Duvan Zapata scoring from close range, but Rafael Toloi accidentally got an Antonin Barak boot in the face, leaving him with a bloody nose. Cristian Romero’s header from a Ruslan Malinovskyi free-kick was well smothered by Marco Silvestri and it was even tougher to parry a Duvan Zapata striker after squirming between center-backs. The Atalanta pressure was growing and after a series of corners, Federico Dimarco handled in the box, allowing Malinovskyi to convert the penalty. Duvan Zapata was sent through by a magnificent Matteo Pessina slide-rule pass moments later, but his finish was deflected onto the near post.
The Colombian did get his goal before half-time, as he ran onto a flicked header, easily out-sprinted Massimo Lovato, and delicately swept the finish past on-rushing Silvestri into the empty net. Verona made a triple substitution and did improve after the break, but Atalanta still had the best chances, Cristian Romero’s goal disallowed for handball as he controlled the Malinovskyi free-kick. Pierluigi Gollini’s first difficult save was on 73 minutes, one-on-one using his trailing arm on Darko Lazovic. Luis Muriel came off the bench and immediately drilled through Lovato’s legs to skim the upright, then went on a slalom through defenders with a series of dummies only to fire inches wide. Josip Ilicic went even closer in stoppages, his curler bouncing off the crossbar.
Verona (3-4-2-1): Silvestri; Gunter, Ceccherini, Dimarco; Faraoni, Miguel Veloso, Tameze, Lazovic; Zaccagni, Barak; Lasagna
Suspended: Dawidowicz
Injured: Vieira

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
