Cardiff host Millwall at the Cardiff City Stadium in the 27th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, January 30.
The Bluebirds are coming into this game on the back of the six defeats in all competitions and the latest 2-2 draw with Barnsley in midweek.– and with a new manager. They are in 13th place in the league, further away from play-offs with every game without a win. Lions come into this match on the back of a a 1-2 FA Cup away win against National League side Boreham Wood and a goalless draw against Watford in the league on Tuesdsay. The visitors are three points above the hosts in 17th and will be hoping for their third back-to-back win in the league.
Cardiff are without a win in more than a month (L6, D1) in all competitions after a 3-2 win against Birmingham on December 16. The current downturn in form was enough for Neil Harris to get a sack and the club named Mick McCarthy as a replacement in the dug-out for the rest of the season. Harris had left Cardiff in 15th in the Championship, closer to the relegation zone than the play-offs. This has not been the only worrying sequence of results this season, which the Bluebirds started with a mere three wins from their opening 13 fixtures.
Kieffer Moore's equaliser on Wednesday prevented Cardiff matching their worst run of consecutive defeats. They lost seven in a row in 1985 as they were relegated from the Third Division. All eyes were on McCarthy, who was in familiar surroundings for his first match as Bluebirds manager, returning to his hometown club, whom he represented 314 times as a player. He made bold selection changes, dropping both captain Morrison and Harry Wilson, with Aden Flint making his first appearance of the season after a loan at Sheffield Wed.
Millwall, on the other hand, ended their ten-game winless run with a 2-0 victory away at Bristol and drew against Nottingham next, but the results weren’t that much of a catalyst for their re-ascent to the upper echelons of the table. They cannot get back into the top half with a win this weekend, but another three points would go a long way to rectifying their hot-and-cold recent form. The Lions showed earlier in the season that they can turn on the pace when required, so pretty much anything can happen at the weekend.
The Lions did well too hold the promotion candidates Watford at bay at the Den in midweek, and moved up a place to 15th with their 12th league draw of the season. A poor playing surface was not conducive to slick football and both sides lacked quality in attacking areas as the game wore on. On a more positive note, midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld had an assured debut for Millwall after signing from Birmingham on Monday but Rowett's side are now winless in their past nine home league matches.
