Cardiff host Rotherham at the Cardiff City Stadium (Cardiff) in the 46th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 12.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, May 8. Read our reasons for Cardiff vs Rotherham prediction and betting tips.
When Mick McCarthy came in back in January, the 'new manager bounce' effect saw the Bluebirds briefly flirt with the play-offs, but a subsequent poor run of form led to them falling off the pace. Since McCarty took over at the turn of the year they have lost only three matches, but they came in their final ten games where they recorded only three wins (D4) – enough to finish just short of play-offs. As for Rotherham, in their final game in hand, the Millers had the chance to control their Championship destiny by claiming the win that would see them go into the last match of the season outside of the relegation zone. As it is, a 0-0 draw at Kenilworth Road leaves them needing to beat Cardiff on Saturday and hope local rivals Sheffield Wed deny Derby victory at Pride Park.
In their last game on the road last weekend, Harry Wilson scored a sublime hat-trick at St Andrew’s to give the Bluebirds a 4-0 victory over Birmingham. The Welshman netted an early lob followed by a pair of excellent free-kicks, with Mark Harris also on target for City in an emphatic away performance. Recording back-to-back victories, Cardiff are set to finish just outside the play-off spots after a poor run of just one win in the ten games prior.
It’s obviously disappointing, as before the international break Cardiff were in a fantastic position to go and charge for the play-offs. However, since then the results haven't been as good as what The Bluebirds would have wanted. Looking at the season as a whole, especially the second half, they have played some good stuff at times and it’s a shame they couldn't make that play-off charge throughout the whole season.
On the other hand, going into the final game of the campaign could have been much more comfortable for the Millers because although Luton did too, Rotherham missed chances to win the game. Manager Paul Warne’s pre-match words about his team wasting too many opportunities this season proved on spot. His side lost a lot of games by a single goal margin and that’s not just the strikers, that’s everyone - they needed more goals from all over the pitch.
It could have been a lot different but it’s come down to the last day and Warne’s men will know they need to win now so there’s no grey area. However demoralising Tuesday night was, Rotherham are still in with a chance of a second consecutive Championship season. Their task has certainly been made simple – win and wait for Derby to slide. With Covid-19 postponements creating a brutal backlog of fixtures for them, it has been a long slog for Rotherham but it is crucial they go to the well one last time.

Cardiff meet Rotherham having previously won their last three league matches against the Millers, scoring nine times and conceding just twice. Moreover, Rotherham are winless in five away league matches against Cardiff (D2, L3) since winning 1-0 back in August 1998.
While for Cardiff this is a dead rubber - they can eventually climb into seventh place with a win - a loss or draw for Rotherham here will not be good enough. It’s win or bust for the Millers so we expect an entertaining match.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
