Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday open their campaigns at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, 12 September and the game kicks off at 3pm (UK).
At the beginning of the last season, Cardiff were among the clubs tipped to return to the Premier League, but after a slow start they parted ways with Neil Warnock and Neil Harris took over. He managed to turn their fortunes around and with just ten games to go they were in the 11th place. However, after an impressive end to the season, they climbed to 5th and just fell short in the semi-finals against Fulham.
Sheffield Wednesday 2020/2021 season began with a 12 points deduction after an independent disciplinary panel decided that the club has broken the spending rules. In past seasons they may have had play-off ambitions, but this one will be solely about survival at any cost and it seems like Garry Monk, the manager, has almost impossible task ahead of him this season. All things considered - having a terrible home form, players preferring to leave, and the points deduction to top it all - will make 2020 a year to forget for the Owls.
CARDIFF VS SHEFFIELD MATCH ANALYSIS
The Bluebirds have strengthen their attack this summer, adding Wales international Kieffer Moore from Wigan as a target man up front. in Josh Murphy, Nathanial Mende-Laing and Gavin White, they have a set of speedy wingers and the one who's supposed to pull string from behind is again brilliant Lee Tomlin. They aren't short of good defenders, either, with Sean Morrison and Curtis Nelson forming a strong partnership at the back.
Unlike many clubs in the Championship, Cardiff didn't go through too much commotion this summer, so they have a settled side, which should be a big positive for them. They are a well-tuned squad and that should give them a head-start. Their biggest strength are set pieces, they are not most fun to watch, but they are effective at what they do best.
The Owls were really in a bad place in the closing stages of the last season. At Christmas they were sitting in third place, but since then, they had only four more victories to their name from the 23 remaining matches. They plummeted all the way to sixteenth and their dreadful home record of only 6 points from the 36 possible was better only from the relegated Hull's.
They also have a weaker bench compared to last year's as important players such as Steven Fletcher have left, leaving Wednesday with very few options in the attack. They will be reliant on free transfers and loans to fill in the gaps in the squad. If everything goes to the plan, considering that at least 50 points should in theory be enough to guarantee safety, they will need at least 62. Having in mind that they finished last season with 56, it will be a long season for them.

Neil Harris' old school methods obviously work at Cardiff and their grit and willingness to put in a shift will probably do wonders for them this year as well. They may not be the most pleasing on the eye, but why change something that has been proven over and over again.
For Wednesday, this season has been a culmination of bad results since play-offs in 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, and it has probably a lot to do with things off the pitch. Their season is practically written off at the very beginning, and they will have to do miracles to prove all the naysayers wrong.
