Cardiff host Stoke at the Cardiff City Stadium (Cardiff) in the 37th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7 pm (UK) on Tuesday, March 16. Read our reasons for Cardiff vs Stoke prediction and betting tips.
Cardiff suffered late heartache with a 2-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday afternoon giving Mick McCarthy his first defeat in the dugout as Bluebirds boss. The result saw City’s eleven-match unbeaten run come to an end (W7, D4) putting a little dent in their play-off hopes, though Bluebirds’ attention is now firmly focused on bouncing back against Stoke in midweek. Meanwhile, Michael O’Neill pointed to problems at both ends of the pitch as Stoke suffered a demoralising 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough - their fourth loss in five matches. The Potters are now left five points behind ninth-placed Middlesbrough as their season peters out.
The veteran manager scooped the February manager of the month award after signing a new two-year deal to remain in South Wales until the summer of 2023. His side's unbeaten streak had propelled them to within a touching distance of the top six, but after injuries to Joel Bagan and Joe Bennett, his unbeaten start to life as Bluebirds manager was brought to a dramatic end after the Hornets left-back struck the club's first free-kick goal in five years to snatch all three points.
Since the arrival of Mick McCarthy as a manager, Cardiff City have enjoyed a turnaround which has been nothing short of miraculous. The Bluebirds were 15th in the table when he took over from Neil Harris and the aim was to get them out of the rut they were in and propel themselves away from a looming relegation battle. However, after a defeat at the weekend, McCarthy's soaring Bluebirds are now a little further away from the play-off mix, seven points behind Barnsley in 6th, as we reach boiling point in this Championship season.
On the other hand, Stoke were picked off all-too easily by Middlesbrough on Saturday which sucked them deeper into mid-table and there are inevitable calls for young hopefuls to be given a chance to show if they can seize a chance. On the flip side, it’s not too late for a player – or, if there are many Riverside repeats, several – to show that they are not up for the ride. Stoke’s performance was marred by stupid free-kicks, sloppy passes, sleepy marking.
A goal at a set piece and two free runs through, albeit from different lengths, were a far cry from the team who kept 16 clean sheets in the first 26 games of the season. That’s five out of the last six away games when Stoke have conceded at least two, letting in 15 in all, so it’s something that needs to be sorted out with Cardiff to come up next on Tuesday, as the Potters have now slipped into negative goal difference.

Cardiff meet Stoke having previously won two and lost one in their last five Championship matches, with two draws, to boot. Last time out in December, Bluebirds celebrated 2-1 at Stoke and could do a double over the Potters with a win here. Cardiff also have a slightly better overall record with 9 wins to Stoke’s 7 in their last 20 meetings.
Cardiff defeat against Watford came after three consecutive victories at home, while Stoke are on a four-game losing run on the road. Cardiff has still got plenty to play for in their hunt for the top-six place, while Stoke look resigned and have downed their tools as it’s become obvious that they are not going up nor going down.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
