Scottish football champion Celtic and best Hungarian team Ferencvaros will meet on Wednesday at the Celtic Park in Glasgow for the 2nd round qualifier of the UEFA Champions League.
Celtic returned to competitive European action with an easy win against Icelandic part-timers KR Reykjavík. Their final 6-0 final could have gone even bigger but Celtic put the foot off the gas and their rivals were just sitting deep in an attempt to keep their hosts out of more goals.
Mohamed Elyounoussi showed class once again and form that made him the first name of the team before he picked up his injury in December. He opened the scoring just after 5 minutes after a great long-range pass from Christopher Jullien. Odsonne Edouard and Jullien then sealed the deal to make it three after the half-hour. Greg Taylor, Edouard, and Elyounoussi finished the job.
That was good preparation for a Ferencvaros team that looks like a Cluj or Copenhagen, two rivals that found ways in recent years to win in games vs Celtic as visitors and finish Scottish champions’ continental interests. They learned that preparation is important and getting the mentality of the team right. In both those games, Celtic was very fragile defensively in important moments.
They will be without great fans at Parkhead but the fact the game will be behind closed doors might assist them to remain measured and controlled against a very tricky rival. They had something similar at the weekend when newcomer Ajeti scored the winner vs Dundee Utd at 83rd minute to gave Celtic an important win in Scottish Premiership. They have seven points from three games in the domestic league but failed to thrill supporters in those matches.
Hungarian champions Ferencvaros enjoyed the extra time to prepare for the clash because their Football Association postponed their weekend league match to make them fresher for their trip to Glasgow. Ferencvaros last week win against Swedish champions Djurgardens in the first qualifying round showed that their most dangerous player Tokmac Nguen, a left-sided attacker is on the high level already.
The fans of the back-to-back Hungarian champions were thrilled how Nguen scored a double and that gave them confidence that Celtic is beatable. The team from Budapest is coached by Ukrainian international and former legendary striker Serhiy Rebrov, and in last year they secured draws away to great teams such as Espanyol and CSKA Moscow.
Ferencvaros is packed with athletic-type players, well-drilled and they are always tough to crack. They are competitive and patient and very prone to blitz rivals with more than decent counterattacks. Their sporting director Tamas Hajnal had done a very good job in recent times and signed Roko Baturina, nicknamed him new Davor Šuker.
They will also need something from their star Somalia who feels that his teammates are confident with the reputation of Hungarian title winners and can’t be underdogs at Celtic Park, especially after the good game vs Swedish champs Djurgardens. The Brazilian midfielder thinks that his side’s defensive qualities are at the top level and expects a tight encounter. They made the Europa League group stage in the last season and only missed out on progressing to the knockouts by a point so they are not unfamiliar with these types of matches with their unbeaten record from home in UEL matches.
Coach Rebrov took a pay cut to move to Hungary from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli two years ago, but his contract has been boosted by financial incentives. He will get a £2.5 million bonus for Champions League Group Stage participation and £500,000 for the same stage of the Europa League.
That shows how Ferencvaros is more than a decent football project. Hungarian government invested hugely in infrastructure and clubs in recent years and their first goal is to play in the Group stage of the Champions League.

Celtic and Ferencvaros will probably try to exploit each other mistakes on the pitch and at this moment Hungarian champions look like a better and more focused team. Away side can steal a win in this game, but our final prediction is Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
