Chelsea host Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge (London) in the second leg of the last sixteen in the Champions League and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday, February 17. Read our reasons for Chelsea vs Atletico prediction and betting tips.
Chelsea hold a narrow advantage after their 1-0 win in the first leg in the neutral venue in Romania. Takumi Minamino (Southampton) remains the only opposition player to score against Chelsea since Thomas Tuchel took charge and he'll look to his side's resolute defence to secure a place in the next round of the Champions League. On the other hand, Atletico have it all to do at Stamford Bridge, but on a run of two wins in seven, form is not on their side. They have, though, won four of their last six away matches, which is a boost as they look to overturn the one-goal deficit.
Chelsea start the second leg of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid with a 1-0 lead and are fancied to build on that advantage. The Blues troubled their opponents on the break in Spain and should have more counter-attack chances here with Los Colchoneros needing to chase a win. Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick proved the decisive moment in a predictably tight tussle at the National Arena in Bucharest three weeks ago.
Chelsea managed the first leg well and were confident, but faced obviously a great team so they stayed very committed for the full 90 minutes. The Blues dealt well with Atletico’s main strengths and now they need to stay focused and finish the job at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have since extended their unbeaten start under Thomas Tuchel to 12 matches with some more solid Premier League displays, with no goals conceded in four games (W2, D2) since the first leg in Budapest.
As for the visitors, Atletico are top of the La Liga and have a strong European pedigree, so it would be foolish to rule out a comeback in London. However, they put in a very subdued performance in Romania, failing to get a single shot on target, as the Blues comfortably kept Luis Suarez quiet. There were really few opportunities to score and Chelsea took theirs, but apart from that, it was an even match.
Atleti showed last season they can come to England and get a result, beating Liverpool 3-2 after extra time at Anfield. The feeling this term, though, is that chasing a first La Liga title triumph since 2014 has become the number one priority. Saturday’s goalless stalemate at Getafe gave Barcelona and Real Madrid encouragement they can still challenge, so the domestic stakes are rising. Los Colchoneros’ plan here will be to keep it cagey early on and then try to nick the goal in the later stages.

Chelsea meet Atletico having previously won one of their three home Champions League matches against Atlético Madrid (D1 L1) – a 4-0 win in the 2009/10 group stages. Their one home defeat was in the second leg of the semi-final in 2013-14, losing 3-1.
The overall head-to-head between the two clubs in European competition was perfectly balanced until Chealsea’s first-leg win, with two wins each, three draws, and 11 goals each until then. Atletico have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. Meanwhile, Chelsea will attempt to progress past the Round of 16 for the first time since the 2013/14 campaign (semi-finalists).
We expect another cagey affair here, with Chelsea trying to protect the first-leg lead, so the BettingKick’s Chelsea vs Atletico prediction is: Under 2.5 goals

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
