Chelsea host Crystal Palace in the fourth week of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge (London) on Saturday, October 3 and the game kicks off at 12.30pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
After three rounds of the Premier League Chelsea have picked up 4 points from a win on the opening day against Brighton (1-3) and a draw from the most recent West Brom match (3-3). In between, they lost to defending champions Liverpool at home (0-2). Frank Lampard has good options at his disposal. His side needs to settle, it's quite obvious. But will they manage to regroup in time for Palace at home?
Because Palace sits 6th in the table, three places above Chelsea, and with two more points from their first two wins. Those came against Southampton at home (1-0) and Manchester United away (1-3). Unfortunately, they followed that hard-fought win with a defeat to Everton at home (1-2), which ended their little winning run and got them back on the ground. Their unpredictability makes them a tough rival for Chelsea on Saturday.
MATCH ANALYSIS
Chelsea entered the new season much improved in terms of squad depth, bringing in several world-class players this summer. Werner and Havertz have featured in all games so far, and Thiago Silva was given captaincy on his debut against West Brom. He made a mistake leading to Baggies' second and one can wonder if such squad is going to take some time to gel. as It leaves Chelsea's boss Frank Lampard exposed a bit as the expectations are running high. The game against West Brom also highlighted the goalkeeper issue as Kepa was replaced by Willy Caballero, while they wait on their new signing Edouard Mendy from Rennes. While Lampard tries to sort out his defense, he must rely on his attackers to produce, and the game against their London rivals is a perfect chance to turn the corner.
Crystal Palace looked to build on their historical 1-3 win against Manchester United but were stopped in their tracks by Everton, who didn't break too much sweat to take away all three point from London. Thus, they ended their best start to the season ever, before they could have reveled in it for too long. There were positives for Roy Hodgson's team, with summer signing Eberechi Eze producing a lively performance on his full Premier League debut for the club, but besides the equalizer the Eagles failed to take a shot on target. After ending last season with a whimper, Palace could not have hoped for a better start, but more testing times are surely in store for Hodgson's side, as their next step involves a visit to their London's neighbors, Chelsea.
