Chelsea host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge (London) in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 14. Read our reasons for Chelsea vs Crystal Palace prediction and betting tips.
CHELSEA vs CRYSTAL PALACE: GAME EXPECTATIONS
Crystal Palace’s new manager Patrick Vieira faces a daunting first assignment as a Premier League manager with a trip to face the European champions and Super Cup winners Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel’s side earned their first silverware of the season on Wednesday night when they beat Villarreal on penalties to lift the Super Cup at Windsor Park, Belfast. Both teams have been active during the transfer window with Romelu Lukaku set to sign for Chelsea and Palace bringing in defender Joachim Andersen and youngsters Marc Guehi and Michael Olise. Chelsea put four past Palace home and away last season but should expect a tougher game in their Premier League opener.
CHELSEA vs CRYSTAL PALACE: THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
This will be the first full season for manager Thomas Tuchel, who has now followed up his Champions League win with victory in the UEFA Super Cup. However, the Blues have taken all three points from their opening home game of a new campaign just twice across their last five attempts (D1, L2), and that’s despite starting as favourites on four occasions. They will be keen to show they mean business on the opening weekend though, and will want to hit the ground running given that no team conceded more goals in the first 15 minutes of PL matches last season than Palace.
Meanwhile, after being condemned to the bottom half of the PL table for a sixth consecutive season, Palace are beginning a new era under Patrick Vieira. Remarkably, Palace’s first away trip in each of their last 16 league seasons has produced a winner (W5, L11), with an Old Trafford triumph in early 2020/21 their biggest scalp. Against fellow London clubs, though, their recent form has not been so rosy. Palace failed to defeat any of the other four London teams that survived the 2020/21 PL season (D3, L5), with two of their three heaviest losses coming at the hands of Chelsea.
CHELSEA vs CRYSTAL PALACE: TEAM NEWS
Both teams have been active during the transfer window with Romelu Lukaku set to sign for Chelsea and Palace bringing in defender Joachim Andersen and youngsters Marc Guehi and Michael Olise. Chelsea will likely be without forward Hakim Ziyech, with the former Ajax man having suffered an injury against Villarreal. Also, Romelu Lukaku won't be available this weekend. Other than that there are no known issues and manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to have a fully fit squad at his disposal.
Crystal Palace are coming into a transitional season under new manager Patrick Vieira with the squad appearing slightly weaker than the last term. There are plenty of uncertainties surrounding the club with the likes of Gary Cahill, Mamadou Sakho, Patrick Van Aanholt, and Andros Townsend following former boss Roy Hodgson through the exit door. However, holding on to Zaha will at least give them some hope in the attack. Patrick Vieira cannot call upon the services of talented midfielder Eberechi Eze, defender Nathan Ferguson and forward Michael Olise, with all three youngsters nursing injuries.

Patrick Vieira is back in the Premier League but could not have asked for a much tougher start as Crystal Palace manager as Chelsea go into Saturday’s opener on a high after beating Spanish side Villarreal to win the UEFA Super Cup. An opening-day trip to the European champions at least gives the Frenchman a relatively free hit, with the odds suggesting an easy win for Thomas Tuchel’s men. Unfortunately for Vieira, we can’t see any other result.
