Chelsea host
Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge (London) in the second leg of the UEFA
Champions League semi-finals and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday,
May 5. Read our reasons for Chelsea vs Real Madrid prediction and betting tips.
Chelsea picked up an excellent 1-1 draw in a rain-soaked Madrid last week and the away goal will be a boost for Thomas Tuchel's side. The Blues have only conceded five goals in London in the 11 games Tuchel has overseen in the capital, all of which came in a 5-2 loss to West Brom in early April. On the other hand, Karim Benzema netted a superb equaliser at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano to boost Los Blancos' hopes of securing a Champions League final spot. Real Madrid have conceded just two goals in their last seven away matches, and are unbeaten on the road in nine, however they need to find a way to break down this staunch Chelsea backline to beat the Blues.
Chelsea went to Madrid last week knowing the size of the task at hand. Not only had the London club over-achieved in this competition, according to many fans and pundits, but they were also now in the last four and off to the home of the mighty Real Madrid. However, this did not faze the blues, and they stood to fight against a strong opponent who is usually unbeatable on their patch in most competitions.
The game finished 1-1 despite chances for both teams in the closing stages of the game. The draw and away goal would have suited Chelsea much more than Real Madrid. The home team now know a goalless draw would send them through. But no one in the home dressing room will be under any illusions that the job is done. Chelsea is in a strong position, but it remains fragile.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid fans know their team missed a glorious opportunity to win at home and take the lead to Chelsea, where they’d be favourites to progress to the final. As it stands, Chelsea is now in a stronger position. That’s far from ideal for the visitors, but it’s excellent news the neutrals as it means Blancos must come to London and score at least once. Madrid conceded early in the first leg, but they know they can’t afford to do that again here.
Real must find the net at least once, but they must keep it tight in defence and protect themselves from a Chelsea attack. There is an embarrassment of riches in the away dressing room when it comes to attacking players. The visitors will arrive confident they are good enough to score and know they have come through similar situations in this competition many times before. Nothing will shock the Spaniards, so we can expect them to get down to business from the first whistle.

Chelsea meet Real Madrid for the fifth time in European competition, while they are unbeaten against them in the previous four (W2, D2). This will be the first time across the five meetings that Chelsea have hosted the Spanish side.
Chelsea can afford to slow the game down on home turf and hit Real Madrid on the counter and given the home side's defensive resolve, they should have enough for the win and secure their place in the Champions League final.
