CHELSEA VS RENNES MATCH ANALYSIS
First round in the Group E saw all four teams share the points and Chelsea have, after a goalless home draw against Sevilla, recorded their first Champions League win against Krasnodar (0-4) in Russia. The Blues are now joint-top of the group E with Sevilla below them on goal difference. As for Rennes, after surprisingly being held to a draw in France (1-1) by Krasnodar in their group opener, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla in Spain last Wednesday and finished the 2nd round bottom of the table with a single point.
After a summer of heavy spending, Frank Lampard’s side have endured a somewhat inconsistent start to the new season. Star players like Kai Havertz and Timo Werner are yet to truly excel, but you get the feeling it is only a matter of time, given their immense quality. Against Sevilla, they failed to score for only the second time in eight games this season, but Lampard's side at least managed a clean sheet after a much-improved performance at the back.
They were even more solid in their next CL game at Krasnodar, as Hakim Ziyech scored his first Chelsea goal, while Hudson-Odoi, Havertz and Pulisic also scored to pick up three points in an emphatic win in Russia. Back-to-back goalless draws had signaled that Lampard had put in an effort to sort out his side's defense, and while they will definitely face tougher opposition than Russian rookies Krasnodar, Lampard will be delighted that his attacking riches also kicked into another gear. Four points from two games is a solid start to their Champions League campaign and despite their run of draws Chelsea have now lost just once in 10 games this term.
Their next opponents, Rennes are doing fine in Ligue 1, having lost only once in nine matches (W5-D3-L1), which has been enough for the third place in the table below Lille and PSG. They should try to translate some of that form to their Champions League campaign as the group looks wide open after two rounds, with their Wednesday’s London opponents probably the likeliest candidates for the top spot in the group.
Last Wednesday Julien Stephan and his men walked away from the match highly disappointed with their performance. Flat in attack is one thing, but the leaky defense is rather worrisome. If not for a fantastic performance from Gomis and the mercy of the posts, this game could have gotten out of hand. However, they bounced back in Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win against Brest, and will look to right the ship in the UEFA Champions League too against Chelsea next.
