Coventry host Barnsley at the St. Andrew’s Stadium (Birmingham) in the 42nd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Sunday, April 18. Read our reasons for Coventry vs Barnsley prediction and betting tips.
The Sky Blues moved up three places to 18th in the Championship after their 1-0 win at relegation rivals Rotherham. Brighton loanee Leo Ostigard provided one of the most important goals of the season on Thursday evening as Coventry beat the Millers to move six points clear of the drop zone after winning two of their last three league games. On the other hand, Barnsley got the job done by virtue of two second-half goals against Middlesbrough and the sight of the Reds breaching the 70-point barrier for the season is psychologically significant for Valerian Ismael’s side. The Tykes moved five points clear of seventh-placed Reading in the process and also registered their first home win in four matches at just the right moment in the campaign.
The Sky Blues took a huge step towards securing their second-tier status with three big points against chief relegation rivals, restoring their six-point cushion with the Millers with five games to go. A second-half goal from Leo Ostigard secured an outstanding victory at the New York Stadium, which Robins hailed as the club’s best away display of the season. But the manager was quick to adjust his joy after the match, stressing that the job’s not done yet with five big games yet to come, starting with in-form Barnsley at St Andrew’s on Sunday.
Mark Robins’ men now aim for back-to-back league wins for the first time since March 2020. However, they drew at Barnsley last September, which could be a concern as from their other four away draws this season, Coventry only won one of the corresponding home encounters (D1, L2), and failed to score in the other three. That said, Mark Robins’ side have suffered defeat in only three of their last 16 league encounters at their temporary home of St. Andrew's (W7, D6).
A goal direct from a corner from Alex Mowatt, who crowned his Championship player of the month award in fitting fashion, saw the Reds captain register his eighth goal of an outstanding campaign to break the deadlock shortly after the hour mark following an error from Boro keeper Marcus Bettinelli. Daryl Dike’s eighth goal of the season 15 minutes from time sealed the victory on an afternoon when Barnsley were far from at their best, but controlled the second half and got the vital three points for their play-offs bid.
Their 21st league victory was ticked off with minimum fuss and the game management was sound. The Oakwell outfit have now won as many second-tier games as they have managed in their previous two seasons at Championship level in 2019/20 and 2017/18. With 71 points for the season now, a play-off ticket is Barnsley’s to lose and a third-placed finish is a realistic aim. In the end, it was all about getting the result after Reading lost and create a gap between clubs.

Coventry meet Barnsley unbeaten in 25 home league matches against the Tykes (W18, D7) since losing to them 3-2 all the way back in August 1923. Barnsley and Coventry drew 0-0 at Oakwell in the Championship earlier this season, but, interestingly, the sides have never drawn both league games in a single season.
Coventry have won three of their last five home games (D1, L1), with the Sky Blues keeping clean sheets in three of those matches. On the other hand, Barnsley have won their last six away league fixtures in a row, scoring 14 and conceding just five goals in this time - the run is the best in the club’s history.
