Coventry host Derby at the St. Andrew's Stadium (Birmingham) in the 35th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, March 6. Read our reasons for Coventry vs Derby prediction and betting tips.
Coventry remain six points above the relegation zone in 20th after losing 2-1 against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night. With the season picking up a frantic pace, and with only one win in their last nine Championship matches (D3, L5), the Sky Blues better find solutions to their problems, or they might find themselves right in the middle of a relegation dogfight soon. As for Derby, the Rams have turned their season around of late under a rookie boss Wayne Roonie, moving up to 18th and nine points above the relegation zone with a run of three losses in ten. The Rams have won five of those matches but were outclassed 4-0 by the in-form Cardiff in midweek, ahead of their Birmingham trip.
For Coventry, the biggest objective is surely to stay up and anything better than that will be a bonus. They still look like they’re trying to find their feet in their long-awaited return to the second-tier of English football, but are currently safe from the drop. However, the Sky Blues’ four defeats in six games (W1, D1) have sucked them back into a precarious position in the league. Coventry are winless in 14 of their last 17 overall matches and had failed to keep clean sheets in 11 of their past 13 games.
Against Boro, they were in the game for the full 90 minutes and if they had a bit better quality when getting into the box it could have been a different story. However, confidence is still strong, despite the sky Blues’ latest defeat. Mark Robins continues to believe that his side will pick up enough points to ensure they stay in the Championship this season. After a period that has come against teams with big budgets and fantastic players, Coventry are now playing teams in and around them. It is going to be testing so Robins need to make sure they are fully prepared and attack this last run of games.
On the other hand, Rooney has made a positive impact since taking sole charge of the team, first as interim boss and then on a permanent basis from January. The Rams have moved clear of the relegation zone and despite the threat of relegation now not causing immediate concern, Rooney will stress to his players that they must remain focused in their bid to occupy a mid-table spot before the closing weeks of the season.
He has overseen 9 wins and 5 draws in his 20 games, a tally of 32 points from 60, and those points have lifted Derby from bottom of the table and in deep trouble to 18th to ease relegation fears. He has got plenty right, and he has been praised for that. He has made changes from game to game, and it has worked but this 'gamble' backfired and so he is open to criticism. That was the case in midweek when Derby's side showed six changes going into a clash against the Championship's form team, and they came unstuck as Rooney admitted the selection was a gamble.

Coventry meet Derby having previously lost just twice in their last 13 home league games against them (W9 D2), although this is their first such match since a 2-0 win in September 2011. Interestingly, that was the only time Derby failed to score against the Sky Blues from their last 15 league meetings. (W5 D6 L4).
Coventry are still without key defender Leo Ostigard, who serves the final game of his suspension. The hosts have not scored more than twice in a game in 19 matches in all competitions. Rooney took the opportunity to rest a number of key men in midweek, meaning he will go for maximum points here.
We, nevertheless expect a low-scoring affair, so the BettingKick’s Coventry vs Derby prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
