Stadion Poljud in Split will host Croatia and Portugal on Tuesday evening when these football superpower teams face each other in the Nations League round 6.
Croatia has been playing below expectations in the new edition of the Nations League, with the team collecting only three points from a possible 15 in the process. Zlatko Dalic’s troops aim to avoid relegation to League B, but after a 1-0 loss against Sweden in the last match that is a probable option and would certainly be a blow to the image of world runners-up, but how they play and look on the field would be a miracle to take a point or three. They could stay in the elite category, even with a defeat, which is also possible but, surely, they will try to be competitive in a game with a now stronger opponent. As things stand, Croatia and Sweden are level on points, head-to-head record, and goal difference, with the 2018 World Cup runners-up sitting above Sweden courtesy of a higher number of goals scored, with Dalic's men notching up seven strikes compared to a mere three for their relegation rivals.
In the last month, Zlatko Dalic has been juggling the names of the players he will send to the field more than ever before, and in several situations, he even changed the decision on the starting lineup on the day of the match. It could be similar this time. The defense suffered especially, from the central defenders, Dalic has only Lovren, who was joined by Pongracic, so it would be logical for him to add at least one more, so left-back Borna Barišić should end up in the more central position. Five players were already out, Kramarić, Rebić, Vrsaljko, Vida and Brozović and now Ćaleta-Car and Uremović joined them. The first received a second yellow card while Uremović injured himself.
Croatia (4-1-3-2): Livaković - Juranović, Lovren, Barišić (Pongračić), Melnjak (Barišić) - Badelj - Modrić, Rog - Vlašić - Pašalić (Oršić), Perišić
Portugal's 10-match unbeaten run in the UEFA Nations League came to an end against France, with N'Golo Kante netting early in the second half to give Les Blues a 1-0 win that ensured they finished top of Group 3. The visitors have little to play for after their hopes of finishing top of League A Group 3 were dashed by world champions. Very reliable Rui Patricio, who made several top-drawer saves on the night, palmed a shot straight at the feet of N'Golo Kante, who made no mistake to send Les Bleus through at the expense of Portugal, so the defending champions of the UNL have missed out on a place in the finals.
Portugal has no injury or suspension concerns whatsoever for their trip to Split, but Santos could make a few changes with little on the line and no need to take any unnecessary risks. Jota, who has been in electric form for Liverpool, could be handed a start, while Wolverhampton Wanderers trio Nelson Semedo, Ruben Neves, and Joao Moutinho will all be vying for spots in Santos's first XI.
Croatia has never defeated Portugal in the six times they have faced each other, managing only two draws while A Selecao has won four times. The pair last faced each other in the opening game of Group 3, with Portugal running out comfortable 4-1 winner. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, and Bruno Fernandes are sure to be rested.
Portugal (4-2-1-3): Anthony Lopes; Nelson Semedo, Ruben Semedo, Domingos Duarte, Mario Rui; Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho; Diogo Jota; Trincao, Paulinho, Pedro Neto

Croatia has many problems at the moment regarding injuries and coronavirus and their bad results are not surprising. Portugal has good chemistry despite France loss, and Fernando Santos will try to avoid the second defeat in a row. Portugal could have the edge to win this game and value is on their side.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
