Atalanta needs to get back on track after two consecutive Serie A defeats on the Stadio Ezio Scida where Crotone already stopped Juventus.
Crotone was also in action on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia Third Round, going to extra time with SPAL before losing on penalties. It wasn’t the result they needed after a 4-2 Serie A defeat to Cagliari. Only Denis Dragus, who tested positive for COVID-19, was left behind for Crotone, as Ahmad Benali got his first start of the season.
Crotone had the first real scoring opportunities, Alessio Cragno using his legs to deny the Junior Messias angled drive at the near post, then Nwankwo Simy curled wide. The goal was coming and it arrived when Reca burst down the left to cross for Messias to fire in first time from 12 yards into the near bottom corner for his debut Serie A goal. Cagliari equalized four minutes later with a perfect left-footed free-kick by Charalampos Lykogiannis from 20 meters. The turnaround was complete with Godin and Joao Pedro started an action that finished with a smart pass through the middle to send Giovanni Simeone one-on-one with Alex Cordaz. Crotone got their equalizer with a fantastic right-foot volley on the edge of the box from Molina into the top corner.
Sardinians went into the half-time break in front thanks to Riccardo Sottil’s header on a Gabriele Zappa cross from the by-line. Straight after the restart, Crotone went down to 10 men, as Luca Cigarini received his second yellow card. Simy thought he’d equalized when turning Godin, but the ferocious finish was saved by Cragno. Leonardo Pavoletti came off the bench and made an immediate impact, as his header from a corner was only parried into the path of Joao Pedro who find the net for the final score.
Crotone (3-5-2): Cordaz; Magallan, Marrone, Luperto; Pereira, Benali, Molina, Petriccione, Reca; Messias, Simy
Suspended: Cigarini
Injured: Dragus
La Dea is finding the balance of domestic competition and the Champions League more difficult to handle this time around, as coach Gian Piero Gasperini took responsibility for excessive squad rotation in the 3-1 home loss to Sampdoria. A fightback from 2-0 down to hold Ajax 2-2 on Tuesday boosted confidence to a degree, but they continue to look rusty. Atalanta could fall to three Serie A defeats in a row for the first time since January 2016, when Edy Reja was the coach.
After they won 4-0 away to Midtjylland, they lost both Serie A games and had to do without injured Marten de Roon, Mattia Caldara, and Cristiano Piccini. Atalanta started well, Josip Ilicic completed a give-and-go with Berat Djimsiti only to then balloon the finish over from 12 yards in a big scoring opportunity. Duvan Zapata also fired wide after running on to an Ilicic through ball. Robin Gosens attempted an audacious, acrobatic, and ultimately ill-advised clearance on Lassina Traore as the Ajax man tried to chest down a Nicolas Tagliafico ball over the top. It was dangerous and the referee awarded a penalty, which Dusan Tadic converted with a dinked finish.
Atalanta was made to pay for another error when Sportiello fumbled the low Neres cross from the left and Traore was ready to bundle the rebound over from a couple of yards. Atalanta finally got back into the game when Papu Gomez floated a perfect ball to the back post for Duvan Zapata’s header into the net. Zapata completed his brace and the comeback in six minutes. He ran on to a Mario Pasalic ball down the right and smashed an unstoppable right-foot rocket into the roof of the net. It was his fifth Champions League goal in 10 games.
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Sportiello; Toloi, Palomino, Djimsiti; Hateboer, Pasalic, Freuler, Gosens; Gomez; Muriel, Duvan Zapata
Suspended: None
Injured: Caldara, De Roon, Gollini, Carnesecchi

Atalanta lost the flow in the previous games but the quality is still there. Some rotations Gasperini made hurt them and they must be heavy favorites to win this game against Crotone.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
