2 - 2
There will be a familiar matchup when Crvena Zvezda and Milan, the two former European champions, face each other in the Europa League last 32.
Crvena Zvezda and Milan have met four times in history so far. The first two matches were played way back in 1988 when the sides were paired at the 1/8 finals of the then European Cup (now Champions League) and both legs finished in 1-1 draw, but the Italians triumphed after extra-time and penalties. The second leg was interrupted because of the fog with Red Star leading 1-0, but a day later Milan took their chances from penalties and advanced. The other two encounters took place in 2006 when the teams were drawn against one another in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League. Milan won both of those meetings by a one-goal margin.
Crvena Zvezda has been on fire in the domestic league, they are unbeaten in their last 21 games across all competitions, with 17 wins and 4 draws, they've been consistent goal scorers, scoring in 18 of their last 20 games too. Crvena Zvezda recorded a slender 0-1 victory away to Radnicki Nis in their latest match this Saturday on the frozen pitch and cold weather so players were unable to show the level of their preparation before the big match on Thursday. Though ultras will be absent on this occasion - at least inside the stadium, following UEFA's rejection of a plea to allow 15,000 supporters to attend - Red Star are owners of a good recent record on home soil. Unbeaten in 13 European qualifying matches over the last four seasons, only Arsenal have defeated them in the Europa League proper during that time.
Home coach Dejan Stankovic will be without his best player as winger Aleksandar Katai - the club's top Europa League scorer so far - has been out since December with an adductor injury. Key midfielder Veljko Nikolic suffered an ankle knock last week and may miss out too. Milan Pavkov, who scored a brace against Liverpool two seasons ago could start up front, ahead of Diego Falcinelli, while El Fardou Ben Nabouhane will either play on the right - with Zeljko Gavric on the left - or in a role closer to the main striker.
Crvena Zvezda: Borjan; Degenek, Milunovic, Rodic; Ivanic, Sanogo, Petrovic, Kanga, Gavric; Ben, Pavkov
Stefano Pioli claimed this was Milan’s ‘first deserved defeat’ of the Serie A season, as they were out-played by Spezia in every way. ‘Nothing worked as expected.’ The Rossoneri suffered their first away defeat in Serie A since December 2019, 5-0 with Atalanta, and didn’t have a single shot on target at the Stadio Alberto Picco. This was going to be the weekend they took advantage of Juventus losing to Napoli and Inter with a tricky test against Lazio, but instead, they lost the leadership. “We certainly have to react and we will do. Spezia won deservedly tonight, this is our first deserved defeat of the season, as we had not enough quality or intensity, so our opponents quite rightly took advantage. It will be a valuable lesson for all of us, we realize that if we don’t perform at a certain level, we will be embarrassed like this,” the coach told stated.
Stefano Pioli had a meeting with his Milan players to correct the attitude from the 2-0 defeat to Spezia on Saturday. Spezia won their second home game of the season against the Rossoblu and helped Inter leapfrog the Rossoneri in the table. Next up is a match against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League, followed by the Derby Della Madonnina this weekend and Pioli gathers his men in Via Aldo Rossi. Many media outlets claimed the coach was not happy with the attitude against the newly-promoted side and wanted to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The former Fiorentina coach is reportedly focused on bringing back the humble and enthusiastic style that has brought the Diavolo to the top in Italy this term. The psychological attitude of the group is under observation and should be the main concern before the next match.
Milan boss Stefano Pioli is expected to revert to his customary Europa League lineup, giving several players a chance to recuperate ahead of the Milan derby. In defense, Simon Kjaer will be rested and Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori should come in, while full-back Davide Calabria will reportedly sit out the trip to Serbia. Forward Ante Rebic returned to group training earlier in the week and is set to be fit for Thursday after recovering from a knee injury, so will contend for a start alongside Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz. Samu Castillejo is expected to play in support of Mario Mandzukic in the attack, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be rested ahead of the upcoming San Siro battle with Inter.
AC Milan: Tatarusanu; Dalot, Tomori, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Meite, Tonali; Rebic, Castillejo, Leao; Mandzukic

Crvena Zvezda must play similarly as Spezia if they want a positive result in the first leg, be aggressive, and with well-prepared counter-attacks when the opponent eases the pressure and try to dominate possession. If Milan doesn’t accept this challenge with full focus, the home team should exploit their weaknesses. Both teams to score could be the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
