Crystal Palace host Chelsea at Selhurst Park (London) in the 31st round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 5.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, April 10. Read our reasons for Crystal Palace vs Chelsea prediction and betting tips.
Crystal Palace have made themselves difficult to beat across the last six rounds (W2, D3, L1) and have held Everton to a 1-1 draw last time out, enough to keep them in 12th place in the table. Another positive is their current three-game run of clean sheets at home (W1, D2), Palace’s best such run in the top-flight since a streak of four that ended back in April 1992. Meanwhile, Chelsea has slipped to 5th, a point behind West Ham, following a bizarre 5-2 drubbing by second-from-bottom West Brom at Stamford Bridge. The Blues went ahead through Christian Pulisic but Thiago Silva’s red card turned the game around and Albion ran riot to end Thomas Tuchel’s 14-match unbeaten start in charge.
Crystal Palace’s place in the Premier League for another season is already assured, as they have picked up 38 points from their 30 fixtures this season. The Eagles could yet finish in the top half of the table, but that could prove to be a challenge as they are four points off tenth-placed Arsenal. Palace do come into this game on a two-game unbeaten run, as they struck late to earn a point against Everton last time out. Super-sup Michy Batshuayi scored the equaliser with just four minutes remaining in that fixture. However, he will be unable to play against his parent club this weekend.
Crystal Palace staged a late assault on the Europa League places last season before falling apart in the closing games. There is little chance of them putting pressure on the top seven or eight teams this time, and the Londoners look to be running down the clock to the end of the season and summer break. Beating relegation and holding their place in the Premier League is Palace’s main aim in most seasons, and the club’s board will be delighted they have already achieved that with games to spare.
On the other hand, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea beat Porto 2-0 in midweek, helping to soothe the wounds of a 5-2 hammering at the hands of West Brom in the last PL round, in what was the only match across the Blues’ last nine in which they failed to keep a clean sheet. The defeat means that the Blues have now won just twice in their last six league outings, but things could have been much worse for Chelsea had Everton and Tottenham picked up wins over the weekend.
Chelsea will need to get back to winning ways this weekend, as the race for the fourth spot is heating up with just eight games of the season remaining. A second defeat on the bounce could hand the advantage to the sides around them. They’re favoured for victory here though. After trashing the Palace 4-0 in the reverse fixture, the Eagles are enduring their longest head-to-head losing streak against Chelsea in their history (L6). With a vital Champions League win on Wednesday night, Chelsea are red-hot favourites to inflict more misery on Palace.
