CRYSTAL PALACE VS SHEFFIELD WED MATCH ANALYSIS
Crystal Palace welcome the Blades to Selhurst Park having conceded 10 goals during defeats to Liverpool (0-7) and ten-man Aston Villa (3-0), prior to the Leicester match, but have consolidated against the Foxes and were unfortunate to lose maximum points. With a 1-1 draw they have climbed the standings to 14th with 19 points ahead of the Sheffield visit. The Blades, on the other hand, just cannot get a break this season. They are still waiting on their first league win this season after a 1-0 defeat to Burnley on Tuesday at the Turf Moor. They have now lost 14 games of the possible 16 (D2) and are rooted to the foot of the table with only 2 points.
Although the Eagles had a difficult run of games, Roy Hodgson’s men are now five matches without a win (D3, L2). The two terrible defeats left the Eagles wary of the relegation threat, meaning a third consecutive defeat could have sent them on a downward spiral dangerously close to the red zone. The signs have been obvious that Hodgson’s side needs to improve heading into the second half of the campaign.
Against Leicester, Palace were second best throughout the first 45 minutes. However, the hosts were much more combative after half-time and took the lead when Wilfried Zaha finished superbly from Andros Townsend's cross, only for Harvey Barnes' second goal in as many games to rescue a point for the Foxes. Hodgson will be frustrated at his team's inability to hold on to their slender lead, but following those heavy defeats against Liverpool and Villa, this was certainly a step in the right direction.
For Sheffield Utd, on the other hand, the latest defeat puts them one step closer to relegation, with the Yorkshire outfit being cut further adrift by the week. The Blades did not lack effort or commitment in their latest defeat but, yet again, that was not enough for them. They don't seem to be able to hurt teams. Tuesday's clash with Burnley really was really in the must-win category, given that the Clarets are only just above the dropzone themselves.
The result represents a good start to the week for Burnley, but the beleaguered Blades have now equaled Queens Park Rangers' record of 16 games for the longest winless start to a Premier League season. The inability to combat Burnley's aerial threat led to Ben Mee's first-half header which was enough for the win eventually. Their cause was not helped by a statement prior to kick-off confirming a number of individuals at the club have tested positive for coronavirus and gone into self-isolation in line with Premier League guidelines.

The Eagles have kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 Premier League games, conceding in each of their last 15 in the competition since beating Southampton 1-0 on an opening day. A draw against Leicester is a step in the right direction for Palace, who made amends for those recent painful defeats. As has so often been the case this season, they will look for Zaha to provide the Eagles' inspiration.
On the other hand, Jack O'Connell's injury has clearly had a negative impact on Sheffield United. The central defender, who is unlikely to return before spring, was a key component last term when they kept 13 clean sheets. Now, the Blades are the only side in the Premier League yet to keep a clean sheet this term, having conceded 11 more goals than at the same stage of the 2019-20 campaign.
Palace lost home and away to Sheffield Utd last season, but they won't get a better chance to pick up three points than against the Blades on Saturday.
