DERBY VS PRESTON MATCH ANALYSIS
The Rams are undefeated with Wayne Rooney solely in charge in six matches (W2, D4). After their most recent 2-0 home win against Swansea, they had a week’s rest as the league game against Rotherham has been postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak in the Millers squad. The Rams have spent the week in 22nd place with 16 points and could climb out of the relegation zone with a win against Preston. The Lancashire side came into last weekend’s game on the back of two consecutive away defeats to Luton (3-0) and Barnsley (2-1). However, they regrouped at home with a solid 1-0 win against Bristol and are sitting in 15th place with 26 points ahead of their trip to Derby.
After setting a negative record for their worst start in a season, Derby are now healthy ten points from the rock-bottom Sheffield Wed and on goal difference below Rotherham. The Rams have now registered their first win at Pride Park, which could boost their morale for the rest of the campaign. The quartet Rooney, Liam Rosenior, Shay Given, and Justin Walker oversaw two defeats after Phillip Cocu's exit on 14 November, but the last six games have shown that Rooney can cope with being in sole charge of the Rams.
Against Swansea, Rooney's promising start to life in management continued as Derby County toppled high-flying Swans to claim the first home win of the season. The Rams remain in the Championship's bottom three on goal difference despite extending their unbeaten run since Rooney was made interim head coach to six games. But this was a performance full of promise as Derby outplayed a Swansea side who are usually hard to beat.
As for Preston, they have established themselves as a mid-table club in the last five campaigns as they have finished 11th,11th,7th,14th, and 9th. The big question is if they can break into that top-six bracket this season. Alex Neil, the manager, remains faithful to the Lilywhites which signals the belief he must have in this crop of players. They could use with more consistency though if they want to make a big push for the play-off. They have just once strung two wins together this season and will want to stop the in-form Rams in their tracks.
On Friday, December 18, Daniel Johnson's first-half penalty was enough for Preston North End to beat Bristol and hand the Robins their third straight Championship loss. Dean Holden's visitors were a different side after the half-time introduction of Antoine Semenyo who, along with midfielder Callum O'Dowda, forced several excellent stops from Declan Rudd, but Preston held out for victory.

Derby were the lowest scorers in the Football League's three divisions going into the previous game. They haven’t conceded in their last four matches, but on the flip side, they’ve failed to score in 52.63% of their Championship fixtures so far. However, Derby have been playing with confidence ever since Wayne Rooney took over the reins, and with Kamil Jozwiak scoring his first goal since joining Derby in September, the floods might open against Preston.
Alex Neil's side, who have conceded a Championship-high 30 goals this season and are on course for another mid-table finish, are winless in 13 previous league trips to Pride Park (D6, L7). Moreover, they’ve lost three (W1) of their last four league awaydays. Preston manager Alex Neil has a two-fold task for Preston here – to finally defeat the Rams on the road and to start a possible winning streak.
BettingKick’s prediction for Derby vs Preston match is: Over 2.5 goals
