Derby County and Reading go against each other in a season opener at Pride Park (Derby) on Saturday, 12 September and the match kicks off at 3pm (UK).
Even though Derby has been now exiled from the Premier League for the last twelve years, they have reasons to be optimistic that last season was a good sign of the project in the making under Philip Cocu. They finished 10th, which is their joint worst result in the last eight years. During that time they have seen many false dawns, but reaching play-offs will be their ambition again.
Reading have been really busy this summer after Mark Bowen, who managed to do what was asked of him and keep them up last season, was replaced by former Serbia youth coach Veljko Paunovic. Another addition to the coaching staff is former Manchester United man Quinton Fortune. There was a bit of a summer clear-out with several senior players departing, but the club is willing to spend in the coming weeks.
DERBY VS READING MATCH ANALYSIS
The Rams have been distracted last season by the shenanigans off the pitch, but Cocu managed to navigate through that by giving a group of talented youngsters a chance to prove themselves with the guidance of Wayne Rooney. He will probably continue in a deeper role, behind Matt Clarke, who has re-signed from Brighton, but another striker will be needed as well. They have also addressed the goalkeepers issue, by signing David Marshall from Wigan.
Defensive midfielder Krystian Bjelik is out with a long-term injury, while Tom Lawrence will miss the first game of the season due to a shoulder problems. The club is reported to want to sign six new additions for the season, but they must act quickly to fill the remaining gaps as new players need to settle fast. As it's been the case before, Derby are considered a play-off contenders because Cocu deserves a lot of credit for what he did last season in midst of all that commotion off the turf.
As for the Royals, what they are lacking now is maybe a real spark, that elusive X-factor. The signing of George Puskas was supposed to provide that, but his form went out of the window as the season unfolded. Meanwhile, several senior players left the club, which may be indicative of a new era for the club. It's also worth mentioning that fit again Lucas Joao will be like a new signing.
The squad will be boosted by Josh Laurent, who caught the eye during pre-season, while Ovie Ejaria made a permanent move from Liverpool only few weeks ago, too late to feature in the pre-season friendlies. On paper, Reading should have enough to survive the campaign, but replacing a manager at this stage of the season doesn't bode well for the Royals, as it could lead to a season of struggle and instability, if not for other reasons, than just for the lack of a proper pre-season.

Derby County definitely look favorite to win this one as they seem to have steadied the ship, while Reading are doing quite the opposite. Preparation is mighty important and they have done little in that regard. On the other hand, assuming that everything goes according to plan this time around for Derby, they should be able to have an upper hand in matches against lower opposition.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
