DERBY VS ROTHERHAM MATCH ANALYSIS
Derby head into this weekend after back-to-back away defeats in the league and in the Round 3 of the FA Cup. The Rams lost 1-0 to another relegation candidate Sheffield Wed first, then exited the FA Cup at the hands of National League side Chorley (2-0). With the loss against the Owls, they are back in the bottom-three in the 22nd place. As for Rotherham, they come into this match on the back of two consecutive league defeats against Blackburn (2-1) and Barnsley (1-2), and an FA Cup defeat to Everton in Liverpool (2-1). The Millers are one place below the host and could go level on points with them provided they win.
The Rams can take a lot of positives from picking up 13 points from their last nine fixtures, but it has not been enough to keep the club outside of the relegation zone. Nevertheless, the games with Rooney in sole charge have shown that he can cope with being an interim manager. However, after losing to their fellow-strugglers Sheffield Wed, they cannot afford another poor performance against a team placed second from the bottom.
Sheffield Wed spoiled Derby boss Wayne Rooney's run of one defeat in nine games as Owls stand-in boss Neil Thompson won the battle of the two caretakers at Hillsborough. The Rams had more of the possession and the better chances over the 90 minutes, but could not avoid the fourth defeat since Philip Cocu's departure in mid-November. Against Chorley, a Covid-19 outbreak meant the Championship club were without their entire first-team squad, boss Wayne Rooney, and most of their under-23 side. So decimated, visitors were unable to pull off a "fairytale".
On the other hand, Covid-19 cases had forced Rotherham to call off the reverse fixture against Derby and Middlesbrough with boss Paul Warne claiming only fears of a points deduction had prevented them from postponing a third straight league match against Barnsley. With a defeat in the Yorkshire derby, they slipped to 22nd place after a ninth defeat from 12 matches as they now must accept that relegation battle is on their hands this season
In the Fa Cup tie against Everton that followed, Rotherham clearly fancied the chance to reach round four for the first time in 18 years and inject some joy into a tough season but received a sucker punch as Abdoulaye Doucoure gave Everton the win in extra-time. Nevertheless, Paul Warne knows how to get the most out of his group of players. They haven't had a big budget in comparison to other Championship sides in the first place, and the lack of expectation for this season may still play into their hands.

Derby have won their last eight home league matches against Rotherham, a run stretching back to 1986. However, the Rams have scored just six Championship goals in open play this season, two fewer than any other side coming into this match.
On the other hand, the Millers have an abysmal record of just 0.36 points per game in away league matches under Paul Warne, winning only two, drawing 11, and losing 34 of 47 games on the road.
The fact that the away team has been victorious in just one of the last 23 meetings between Derby and Rotherham, doesn’t bode well for the Millers, too.
BettingKick’s Derby vs Rotherham prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
