Erling Haaland can help guide Borussia Dortmund a step closer to silverware if they can get past Bayern Munich's conquerors Holstein Kiel and Hauke Wahl in the DFB Cup semi-final on Saturday. Read our reasons for Dortmund vs Holstein Kiel's prediction and betting tips.
Haaland recently reached a half-century of Dortmund goals, with braces in wins against Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg taking him to 53 in 56 appearances in Black and Yellow. The Norwegian has struck at least double in 14 different matches this season, including each of the last five Bundesliga matches when he’s netted. He was re-joined at the weekend by Jadon Sancho, who was making his first start since the start of March when BVB beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 in the quarter-finals thanks to his goal. Dortmund had earlier breezed past Duisburg (5-0) and Eintracht Braunschweig (2-0) before a nervy 3-2 extra-time win over Paderborn in the round of 16. The England winger has been on the scoresheet in all four rounds and should start once again.
Mats Hummels returns from a league suspension at center-back, while Jude Bellingham's dismissal against Wolfsburg doesn't impact his availability in the cup. He is likely to start in midfield given that Mo Dahoud does serve a one-match ban in the competition. Dortmund is a four-time winner of the DFB Cup. They reached four straight finals between 2014 and 2017, but this is the first year since then that they have gone beyond the round of 16. BVB beat Kiel 4-0 away from home in the only previous competitive encounter in the 2011/12 quarter-finals as they won the domestic double under Jürgen Klopp. Hummels and Lukasz Piszczek are the only current Borussia players who were featured that day.
Dortmund: Hitz - Morey, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro - Bellingham, Can - Sancho, Reus (c), Reyna - Haaland
Out: Dahoud (suspended), Moukoko (shin), Schmelzer (knee), Witsel (Achilles' tendon), Zagadou (knee)
Doubtful: Bürki (ill)
Coach: Edin Terzic
Kiel made headlines earlier in this competition when they knocked out holders Bayern in the second round. It was captain Wahl’s stoppage-time equalizer – the second time Holstein had leveled – that took the tie to extra-time and ultimately penalties, where Fin Bartels scored the decisive spot-kick at 6-5. The Bundesliga 2 side had earlier beaten Rielasingen 7-1 in the first round and later knocked out Darmstadt (1-1 a.e.t., 7-6 on pens) and Rot-Weiss Essen (3-0) to get within a game from a trip to Berlin. A fixture backlog means Kiel, who sit fourth in the second division only a point off the promotion play-off with two games in hand, had to travel to Nuremberg (1-1 draw) on Tuesday for a rearranged game.
First-choice goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios is unlikely to feature. Otherwise, coach Ole Werner has a mostly full squad to pick from as Kiel looks to make history. Former Dortmund youth product Janni Serra is Kiel’s top scorer in all competitions this season with 11 goals, including three in the cup. Kiel were champions of Germany back in 1911/12, but this is only the second time they’ve made the final four of the cup. The other occasion saw them beaten 6-0 by another Ruhr opponent, Schalke, back in 1940/41.
Kiel: Dähne - Dehm, Wahl (c), Komenda, Van den Bergh - Meffert - Reese, Mühling, Lee, Bartels - Serra
Out: Thesker (Achilles' tendon)
Doubtful: Gelios (not included)
Coach: Ole Werner

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
