Erling Haaland and Borussia Dortmund could book their place in the UEFA Champions League last 16 when they host Lazio at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.
Erling Haaland has been in typically blistering form on the continental stage this season, scoring in all four of Dortmund’s group games. It adds to his equally great domestic performances which have seen him score 10 times in only eight Bundesliga games, taking his BVB tally to 33 goals in just 32 outings in all competitions. Haaland has 16 goals in just 12 career Champions League appearances. He is the competition’s top scorer this season with six from four matchdays, coming at a rate of one every 58 minutes.
The Norwegian striker was unable to prevent a slip-up at home to Koln last Saturday, but Dortmund is in a prime position in Group F to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stage for the seventh time in their last eight participations. Three straight wins put them on nine points, one clear of Lazio and five ahead of Club Brugge, who they twice beat 3-0. It means Borussia will be through with at least a draw, or if the Belgians fail to beat Zenit Saint Petersburg.
BVB has scored 37 goals in 15 competitive matches this season. Victory over Lazio will see Dortmund clinch first place and be seeded in the last 16. Lucien Favre has an almost fully fit squad to choose from, with Raphael Guerreiro set to return after sitting out the Cologne defeat, although Thomas Meunier has been ruled out with a muscular injury.
Should Youssoufa Moukoko feature, he will become the youngest player in Champions League history. Celestine Babayaro holds the current record, having started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucharest in the 1994/95 group stage, aged 16 years and 87 days.
Dortmund: Bürki - Passlack, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro - Can, Witsel - Sancho, Reus (c), Reyna - Haaland
Out: Meunier (calf), Reinier (not included), Schmelzer (knee), Zagadou (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Lucien Favre
Dortmund is on a three-match winning run in the Champions League, keeping as many clean sheets, while Lazio has only won once on German soil in their UEFA competition history. Lazio will also qualify if they win, both games are drawn, or Brugge loses to Zenit. The Italian side is spearheaded by a former Dortmund striker in Ciro Immobile, who had 10 goals in 34 competitive appearances for BVB in 2014/15. He became Lazio’s outright second-highest goalscorer of all time in the league at the weekend but was powerless to prevent a 3-1 defeat at home to Udinese that leaves them ninth in Serie A and ended the club’s eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Udinese turned on the style despite missing several key players and earned a shock 3-1 win away to Lazio. It was a surprise result at the Stadio Olimpico, especially as it was the Friulani’s first Serie A victory here since 2014. Tolgay Arslan made the most of a Roberto Pereyra pass that nutmegged Patric, taking a slight deflection off Francesco Acerbi. Samir acrobatically hit the crossbar, before Ignacio Pussetto doubled Udinese’s lead on the stroke of half-time with Rodrigo De Paul the inspiration this time. De Paul’s flicked pass was intercepted, but only as far as Fernando Forestieri for his first Serie A goal in 12 years. Ciro Immobile earned and converted a penalty, but it was not enough for Lazio to make up for the dismal first half.
The 2019/20 European Golden Shoe winner has scored in each of his last six appearances and will be the man to watch for Lazio on his return to the Signal Iduna Park. Another familiar face to Bundesliga fans is goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who won the title with Bayern Munich in 2014/15. Midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was rested on Sunday but is expected to start at the Signal Iduna Park.
Lazio: Reina - Patric, Acerbi, Hoedt - Marusic, Parolo (c), Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Fares - Immobile, Correa
Out: -
Doubtful: Muriqi (knock)
Coach: Simone Inzaghi

Both teams at the weekend looked like they were thinking too much about this match. One of the important games for Dortmund and Lazio should be a high-scoring affair so both teams to score is a most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
